Gar like fish for a 75 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You might be able to get rocket gars off live food but I was unsuccessful(even though I didn't really try). If you don't like needle nose gar or rocket gar but want a similar fish that kind of represents a gar you might want to look into red or yellow tail barracuda. Yellow tails get 15" and the red tail stays around 12". I do here it's very hard getting them on dead food though.

@Cole thanks, I guess I won't be getting rocket gars after all then if they are hard to wean off of live foods. I don't like the look of barracuda, plus 12-15" seems to big for a non snake like fish in my opinion (I consider Nim snakelike, since he can bend his body)

I was ideally going to have for stocking
~Nim
~2 or 3 rope/reed fish
~Gar like fish
~Morymid (considering elephant nose, worried they would get to big for my tank or a Knifefish of some type (why must the brown ghost knives be so hard to find, and the BGK so big? :( )

Sounds great. Elephant nose should be good because they don't get to big. Where are you located because my LFS always has brown ghost knives in stock. Btw don't let me through you off rocket gars. I really never tried to get them off live food. I starved them for a couple days and fed top water pellets and they gave no interest.

needle nose gar would be cool. and I've known people to get away with florida gar in a 75. if was right or not IDK but th grow to 10" fast but then it slows down to 16" after that it practically stop but the make it to 18"-22" depending on diet and water
i wouldn't recommend needle nose gar from experience they get ick easily and they will bang their
face against the glass when stressed they might be you guys but wait til u actually get one and then thank me for the advice...

Oh good, I'm happy that someone approves my stocking. How big do elephant noses get in everyones opinion? I've read anywhere from 8"-14", some sites even saying 16"? I'm located in CO, but I have only checked the LFS in my city, I should head up to Foco or give them a call and ask them, they have more exotic fish and will do special orders for most fish (unlike my LFS, the guy at petco also offerered to special order for me, and their fish are generally healthier then at my LFS). I couldn't starve a fish though, I mean my method of starving would be putting food in there, and removing it if they didn't eat it. I would stick to frozen foods though, rather than pellets.

I got my Hujeta gar to eat frozen blood worms as long as it stays solid and doesn't defrost so it floats.

I thought it was bad for fish to eat frozen/non thawed foods? That it could make them sick?

Back when I was 8 and taking care of my dads 30 gallon tank. We had a rope fish and an elephant nose fish. They both died around 6-8 years of age and the elephant got roughly 8 inches. It just depends on feeding habits and water clarity. I think 14" is possible if it lives for a very long time under good conditions. Btw what is a nim.(also I probably would have said something to my dad about stock and tank size because a 30 is small for elephant nose but back then I knew nothing about the fish, he picked out and bought it and I took care of it).

My "rocket" gars got off live super easy. Freeze dried shrimp. That's how I got all my fish off live. Even my rays will swim to the top of the tank to snag some shrimp
