Gar like fish for a 75 gallon?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Back when I was 8 and taking care of my dads 30 gallon tank. We had a rope fish and an elephant nose fish. They both died around 6-8 years of age and the elephant got roughly 8 inches. It just depends on feeding habits and water clarity. I think 14" is possible if it lives for a very long time under good conditions. Btw what is a nim.(also I probably would have said something to my dad about stock and tank size because a 30 is small for elephant nose but back then I knew nothing about the fish, he picked out and bought it and I took care of it).

That's awesome how your dad is into fish as well, I am pretty much the only one in my family who cares about fish, excluding my Grandpa who passed away when I was 11 or so. I know I wish I could go back and change some of my stock choices as well when I was younger, I was clueless though as well, as we all were when we started in the hobby. :)

Oh and Nim/Nimmy (aka Nimrod, named from this adorable critter from Surface http://sharetv.org/shows/surface/cast/nimrod is a Senegal Bichir, he's only about ~3.5" right now, in my 29 gallon as my 75 gets cycled.

I'm changing stock again, now that I am running into my typical problem, I only seem to want fish that are mainly bottom dwellers. Especially now that I have discovered the adorable peacock eel.. sigh lol.

So the new stock will be
~Nim
~3 ropefish
~1 peacock eel (not really a *monster fish* but they are darn cute!)
~Some sort of top/midweller, currently considering leopard ctenopoma (I'm guessing they aren't MONSTER FISH as well?), just because the gar like characins are too hard to find/too big/too difficult it seems. Plus, they have big "bug eyes" and leopard spots, which I adore as well.

I'm thinking of just foregoing the knife fish at this point and time, because I would just be settling for the brown ghost knife when I am in love with black ghost knives, and the above fish that I am getting now.

Another good stock choice IMO. And btw my dad doesn't necessarily like fish he just likes the idea of an aquarium. Leopard Ctenopoma are cool fish but darken with age. They still look cool but not as cute as when their babies. Good choice. The only thing I'm on edge about I'd the peacock eel. They are cute fish but keep in mind that they have to have sand because they borrow and rocks(rough or smooth) will damage their nose possibly leading to infections. The other thing about peacock eels is that they borrow and are not often seen. You would just have to make sure it gets it's food rations. And just as a tip you might already know, ropefish are an amazing escape artist. I've had rope fish not tin foil out of the uncovered areas and jump through them. I also find them in my filter quite often.

butterfly fish would be an interesting top water fish. they look like mini arowana with huge fins and peaceful with lower dwellers, should mix fine with everything you want so far

Ah okay I see. My boyfriends mom is similar, she has a 55 gallon and a 2.5 gallon, except unlike your dad probably, not only does she not stock properly, she also believes that a filter is not necessary, and you can cram as many fish in a tank as possible (she has a mix of 4-8" fancy and common goldfish in a 55 gallon with NO FILTER! :( She's trying to sell the tank right now though, I told her I'd take the fish, but she won't give them to me)

Hmmm so they lose their prominent leopard spots then? :/ I had a feeling the darker, faded ones were the same species, just adults. Well maybe I'll get African butterfly fish or some other top dweller fish instead.

I plan on having a pool filter sand substrate, with lots of driftwood and rocks (rather than going fancy planted with eco complete since it's a lot more expensive, and more importantly, rough) and some live anubias, javas, and mosses (something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rpld7EaFd4. )

So his or her nose would be safe from getting cut/damaged. :) As for food, I'd make sure to use my turkey bastor to put some of the frozen worms and shrimps where he/she is hiding out. I figure Nim and the ropefish wont be as much competition as say a pictus catfish or something would be.

And yep, I am very aware that ropefish and peacock eels (and bichirs too) are all WONDERFUL escape artists, and my tank is almost all the way covered with the glass, excluding a 2" gap in the back that is covered with this plastic strip stuff that the back of the glass slides into. (I plan on duck taping or weighting it down or something since it's not as near as heavy as the glass.

There is a tiny 1/2" square hole in the corner of the plastic strip stuff, should I cover that too? Also, I am concerned about air getting in the tank, should I put tiny itty bitty holes in the plastic to allow for o2 to exchange? My tank has a built in corner overflow with a wet/dry sump that goes underneath and back up and through a black flexible hose which I'll attach a spray bar probably. That reminds me, I need to cover the corner over flow so they can't get in there. How should I go about covering that? Is there like a screen or something?

Do you think it would be better to do 2 bichirs and 2 ropefish rather than 1 bichir and 3 ropefish? Some people say they like company, others say they are too aggressive, just like I have heard the same for ropes, but I thought they were gregarious like kuhli loaches?

I'm considering them now, I have always had some interest in them, and they are fairly easily found :) But Nim couldn't eat them? I figured ~4" would be in danger of being a snack?

Butterfly fish should be ok. They're even better at bailing out of the tank though. We've had them jump out when we acclimate other fish. We've lost about 4 of them to that. Your tanks sounds like its going to be great. That sucks though with your bfs mom though. My dad was never that bad. He just never truly researched fish but always had a good ideas about them. Just make sure to include lots of rocks. Are rope fish loved to make borrows under pieces of slate. As for your hole I would just keep an eye on it but you should be ok.

I know they were jumpers, but never THAT bad. Hmm I don't know if I want to worry about that all the time. Maybe killifish or gouramis or something else then..

Ya I feel so bad for fish, I told his mom they are all basically slowly dieing, nope she doesn't care. :(

Do you think I should do 2 bichirs and 2 ropes rather than 3 ropes and 1 bichir?

I plan to have lots of rocks and driftwood to have lots of "caves" for them as well. I figure the more stuff they have to hide in, the more I'll see them :)

Okay, so I don't need to poke tiny holes in the plastic then? Even though it will be basically sealed off, the air will get in/won't be stagnant?

butterflyfish are not that good at escaping. they jump often if stressed but they won't force themselves through tiny holes like eels and ropes so if it is ropefish proof it is butterflyfish proof, just keep an eye on them when the lid is open Plus they are very peaceful to anything they cannot eat and doesn't completely invade the waters surface. I've had butterflies with ctenopoma and ropefish with no conflict whatsoever. Butterflies and to a lesser extent ctenopoma really appreciate high level plant cover, it calms them down dramatically so floating or tall plants would greatly benefit the them.

I'd still go with butterflies. My dad has some and they are very cool fish. Also just in my opinion it depends on what type of bichirs you do. If your talking about senegals than I'd do one because I'm not very fond of their color but I do enjoy their personality. I'd do 1 bichir and 3 rope fish along with the leopard ctenopamo and 2-4 butterfly fish.
