You said you put some floating plants? Put some tall reed like plants in. Alligator gars like to hide in reeds and plants until they see food. It just makes them feel comfortable. And as to your pond or tank question; I say tank. Although I believe fish are more comfortable in ponds I think tanks are nicer to observe them. Just my $.02 though.

yeah totally agree, i might actually go for a large tank maybe 300g for now, because i really love observing them.

and i've also put those kind of plants in the tank. but not much because it was just kind of test to see his reaction to it.

by the way, since i've put plants in the tank. i've seen baby guppies in there. looks like the feeders are breeding.

Female guppies can give birth once a month for six months after mating ONCE. So you can buy only females and have babies showing up for the next couple months. I would scoop the babies out and raise them until they are big enough to be fed to Mr.Happy. =]

yeah i've been dreading the thought of the adult guppies eating the babies.
as i've read somewhere that adult guppies do eat their young mistaking it for food.

and it's Captain Happy! lol

a girl gave him Happy as it's name. and i thought it was too cute of a name for a predator so i put the title Captain.

when i get my 300g, what would you recommend as his First Mate?

With enough floating plants the babies will be fine. Or a ball of yarn. ( like a tangle of it not a whole ball) Tank mates are hard with gars. Sometimes they kill everything and some times they are the nicest fish ever. If you do put in a tank mate make sure its a big fish that can take care of itself. Like maybe an Arrowana. ( thats iffy though)

Arrowanas are becoming too common here in our country already
(because they are believed to bring goodluck)

how about an Arapaima?
i've seen an arapaima maybe around 24" in the lfs where i bought my gator.
and i think they're just stunting it's growth there.
the arapaima was being kept in a tank with a gator gar same size, an arrowana same size too and another decent sized one.. i think it's a catfish.
they can't turn around properly because the width of the tank is less than their length.

the daughter of the fish store owner was very cute though(really my type) and she assisted me when i was there hehe

how about an Arapaima?

I think it would work great and look bad ass.

that's a relief to hear that it would work great :)

but for now i should stop thinking about an Arapaima and focus on my gar first.
at least now i know of a potential good first mate for captain happy. thanks.

Worry about a bigger tank first lol.

guppies with a gator gar?

doh......... :duh:
