pattern changes have been both developmental and environmental...the fish has changed pattern drastically its whole life (you can see pics since i first got it at 3.5" on primitivefishes.com). the current pattern seems to be a bit more stable, and (i am guessing) reflects more of a mature adult pattern...part of the change i am sure was environmental during the switch from black gravel to white and (some) black aragonite. i liked the contrast of all the gars on the black substrate better, but the function of the aragonite was needed for the Cubans (croc II seemed to benefit as well).
if "she" is developing eggs (which tends to be my suspicion given what we have seen in other gars of similar size/shape) there will be no way to tell if they are fertile or not unless we can get another individual to spawn...this fish has always been something of a mystery, but i have enjoyed it so far--
