hey guys recently well about a month i woke up to find y spotted gar with what can only be described as a bent, arched or broken looking back or spine. can anyone help explain what this may be. he has been functioning fine it seems although possibly not quite as active still feeds ok and still surfaces for air although more erratically than he used to. is there an explanation for this all i can think of is that he may have been spooked and swam into the glass. do you think he is in any pain? please help can post pics if noone has seen or heard of anyhting like this b4

sometimes poor water quality can do this to a gar, but if it seemed sudden then it is possible he broke it. It is possible he was spooked into the glass. Is he still eating alright? It is not too uncommon for something like this to happen. If he still has mobility of his fins and body and is eating then I would just let it be. What do you feed him?

and also, a pic never hurts!

Most likely got spooked and hit the glass throwing its spine out of alignment sometime it will cure itself given time-Anne

i cant imagine it being bad water quality as my parametres are always pretty good, he still eats, maybe not as much as he used to but is eating, his fins seem to work ok still maybe his back fins rather than front 2. i feed him on prawn mussels lance fish etc. he wont eat anything other than live food is this an help. do you think it may straighten itself out parson the punn

most time i have seen this happen its do to them running into the glass. depending on how bad it is will determin if it will go back to normal. but if he does look like he is to much pain and is eating ok then go ahead and just care for him, but if its bad and looks painful and he isnt eating then i would but him under

sorry...what did you mean by this? Are you saying the front fins work better than the back, or vice-versa??

A pic still wouldnt hurt, but it doesnt sound like this is a case where the fish needs to be put down. I don't think there is anything you can really do about it but in some cases their backs do straighten up again on their own.

ill get some pics up in just a mo to help you guys out. some pics are with my new spotted which has quite washed out colours they have been like this since i bought him i thought it was because he was unhappy in a small tank but the dont seem to be returning in comparison to my smaller spotted with the poorly back have a little look and see if you can offer any advice on either of my questions. thanks for the input so far guys very useful

a gars coloring, or lack there of, can be due to stress but not always. Every gar is different and some are very light in color, almost patternless, while others are almost black with spots (speaking of the florida/spotted gar)

tell me more about his fin mobility?? He likely broke his back, but what to do about it, if anything, really depends on his ability to move around.
