Gar with Atlantic ray..............

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
just leave him in, that what he can start to get acumulated as you add the salt and its not a huge shock to him

Nothing big or exciting you need to do to convert your ray to salt water. You can keep all the same filtration. I would figure up how much salt you need to make it fully saltwater and add 1/4 of the amount each week until it is full salt. I would buy a good hydrometer (i think that is what they are) that measures the specific gravity of the water. This tells you how much salt you have. The only thing to remember with salt is you have to add it back every water change.

Also, fully dissolve the salt in a bucket of warm water before adding to the tank. You don't want to just dump the salt in as it will burn the ray when it sits on the bottom.

from what i have heard on here, atlantic rays can live in freshwater the problem is that they produce a HUGE amount of urea when they are in freshwater, so to keep one in freshwater the filtration would have to be like 10 times or maybe more than what you currently have on your 125. so many people just keep them in heavy brackish/SW because less urea is produced..

i would suggest either getting rid of the atlantic and getting retic or getting a larger tank and making it SW or high end brackish.

good luck with whichever you choose :D

edit: good luck with converting him to SW:)

also get a protein skimmer:)

thanks for the info. i think i'm going to switch the tank over to saltwater. i've been wanting to have a saltwater tank for awhile now. after i have it all converted to salt , would it be ok to start adding alittle live rock and mabe a few bigger saltwater fish?? or should i just keep it sand and just him in the tank?

one problem i may see (but i'm no expert) is that the salt may kill your bacteria that is in your filters. anyone can correct me if i'm wrong....

the problem with live rock is that the ray may get cut on it....... but then again your ray may know to avoid the rock

also, read up on some SW fishes that are compatible with rays before you buy any other fish

gl....... and get pics once your finished:D

Add a sump to the tank, that way you can add liverock and a skimmer inside it...

thanks for the info, i'll definatly put some pics up when its all dont. heres a pic of my ray before i took out my rock bottom and put sand in for him.
