btw, i'm really curious about the breeding of these guys? do they breed in captivity? its relatively new to shops here to sell such young gators...

they are pretty tough to breed in captivity. It has been done, but is very unlikely. Who know though....If you provide them with eonugh space, it ciuld happen, but you would also have to have a male and a female, and since you cannot sex them easily, that would be a 33% chance just for you to have one of each....then its all up to them.

Oh, and how big is your pond??

he's in a tiny 100g with a RTC. . . sorry i know it sucks... imma pop him to the 250 with the TSN that i'm sure he'll catch up... maybe after a year? or less.. i'll be finish with the pond and they can enter it:)

gar are best kept in smaller tanks and slowly upgraded as they grow. This helps them from smashing into the glass and breaking their backs. As long as he isn't longer then the width of the tank, so that he has enough room to turn comfortably, he will be alright. A 100 is fine for a gar that size for now. How wide is this tank?

How big are the catfish?? Make sure your gar doesnt become food, or vise-versa. These guys grow fast!

i would honestly keep him in a 30 or so until he gets a bit larger.

as far as breeding kara hit most of the points, but one to think about is that A. Spatula does not reach sexual maturity until around 10 years of age.

what are you feeding him? you should try to get him on pellets or shrimp if he isn't already.

nice gar
godluck w/ him

thanks guys!:)

sir karajo,
theyre roughly of the same size... i've posted earlier threads before taking him in... i guess the tank's w is at around more or less 20. . . I'm keeping a watchful eye on them:) as so to my other fishies! hehe

sir demjor,
hey man, i only have a 25 available as of the moment.. sadly... anyway, he's already on little guppies ***he ate 2-4 little ones a while ago!*** :) i dont really mind spoiling them on live food... i'm not really a fan of pellets... imma introduce beef heart later on if he'll take it:)

He tried to explain to the owner that they are in fact called a longnose gar, but the guy just said "they go by all kinds of names" He assumes Jordan is ignorant and will believe whatever they tell him just like 90% of the people that probably go there.

man that must be annoying.

i know u say ur not a fan of pellets, but in my opinion i would try to get him on them as it sets him to know that his food doesn't come from moving objects. live fish, like tank mates. it could keep his agression down a bit as this has worked many times for me in the past.

my baby gator is on pellets right now and he loves them, and is growing like a mad man. and isn't chasing any of my other fish. yet.. lol

nice insight bro... i'll give it a shot... my prob with pellets here is that they are really really low quality pelets...@_@ it's rare to have good ones so to speak... it's like grounded rabbit food or sumthin... =/

feeder fish are extremely low in nutritional value and can cary various diseases. even if you dont like pellets try getting him on some fresh seafood...like market shrimp, chopped smelt, or even FD krill. youll notice much better growth and a healthier fish.
