how big is your baby gator gar right now?

hey guys, the gar is on shrimp! man, it painstakingly took me 2 days to introduce it to him... oh and i also took me quite a few shripms as well! haha! though the rtc ate most of the shrimps that fell on the floor. had to cut it really really fine though... or else he might break his jaw!@_@

he's gettin really fat and more active..:)

anyway, i was thinking of putting an aba-aba with him...cuz imma get one tommorow... whatdya say? cuz people from the knife section told me it was quite dangerous.. and no one could give me the clear groth rate of those knives there... on the other hand, someone (also from the phils) posted a pic of his 4 foot gator with 2 silver aros, flower horns and a 3 foot aba aba.. so now i know that it can be done... but still, eager to know what are the perils and cons of doing this. better safe than sorry.

but i'd still consult the expertise of u guys first.. especially sir richard, sir jordan and ma'am kara.. thanks:D

(i didn't make a new thread to save a lil cyberspace) hehe! soooory!

break his jaw? anyway...that is great that you have him on a healthy diet and eating good. keep it up.

from what i here aba abas are pretty aggressive...having never kept one i wont say "do it" or "don't do it" i myself would not do it, but it may work. how big is the aba aba that you are getting? again...i dont think this is a good idea, but i have no experience w/ aba's.

depending on the size of the aba aba, it will either be eaten by its new tankmates, or it will randomly attack and kill its new tankmates. i would highly advise against it. i have not personally kept this species, but have read plenty about it and had friends who have kept them (experienced fish keepers who pretty much confirmed what is out there in literature).

you also run the risk of this aggressive fish just spooking the gar which could lead to a broken back. definitely not a good idea...yes, certain inadvisable combinations can work out from time to time, but the probability of such is generally low, and the risk generally too high if you value your present fishes--

thanks guys... perhaps if ever i'll go on with this plan, imma have a 3000 gallon tank first...@_@ hopefully this christmas.. haha. someone told me about having "target" fishes. he was able to house the gator and the aba in his 3k tank. had inexpensive flower horns to keep the aba distracted if ever it goes to its aggressive state...

not a fan of having sacrificial fishes though.... really have to think hard about this.@_@ i'll keep yall posted! thanks for the help:)

i think this is a wise decision to not get the aba knife. for people who really care for their fish...sacrificing one is not a risk worth taking.

the 3k gal tank may have changed the equation, or he's just lucky.

anyway the aba aba grows pretty fast (at least on a live food diet when i had it long time ago). not sure how it compares with a gator gar cause i never kept one. as juvy, they are delicate. when they're under say 16" or so, it seems they are mostly fine with tankmates. but the larger they get, the more aggressive they become, and larger one will usually kill off tankmates one by one (from what i read, and the person has a 750 gal, i believe). i only kept mine till 14" or so (can't really remember now), and its already biting feeder fish in half just for the heck of it, definitely not for food.
