Gars and Peacock Bass compatability????

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
When they are small i would put any fish that grows fast and are currently larger then the gar. Once they get large depending on the tank size i would put in fish that are not top dwellers. Let them have there space and keep it well fed and you should not have a problem. Obviously, there is no guarantee that you wont lose a fish once in a while unless you keep it solitary. Good luck keeping an amazing monster!! I love my gars.

What are the dimensions of the 265? A quick search and I've been mainly finding 265 with 24" for the width. If the wifth on the tank is only 24" I would skip it and start on an indoor pond.

My gator gars are currently housed with a group of similarly sized bowfins and an 18" ID shark that they haven't decided to kill yet. The gars and bowfins had killed a slightly larger id shark without any warning. One day it was fine the next it was covered in bite marks, nipped fins and missing a large part of its bottom jaw and throat. What I'm trying to get at is that gator gars are unpredictable, don't house them with anything you aren't willing to lose. Even the bowfin in with them are occasionlly nipped by the gars.

In the future I'll be adding some larger doradid catfish with my gator gars. I have had luck in the past with niger catfish, with very little aggression from the gars but they would still sometime go after them and nip/shred fins. Still a risk, but a risk I am personally willing to take.

Only thing that I would recomend as tankmates for alligator gars is other alligator gars.
