Tetradoxin? as in Puffers? Wow! How many MU? (Mouse Units, a recent discovery of mine...according to Endless 0cean, a Tiger Puffer contains over 1000 Mouse Units, 1 MU being able to kill a 1-0z Mouse in 30 mins.)

Mean total skin TTX levels of newts ranged from no detectable TTX to 4.69 mg/newt and differed among populations

http://biology.plosjournals.org/perlserv/request=getdocument&doi=10.1371/journal.pbio.0060060&ct=1

The lethal potency is 5000 to 6000 MU/mg

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?artid=2525488

Do the math and that gives the Willamette Valley newts (highest amounts of ttx) a value of over 25,000 MU!

To think how much I played with these as a child... and still do.

Tiger Puff was either 10,000 or 1,000.
But WOW, the Salamander is more deadly than Tiger Puffers. TP's reach 3 feet!!:WHOA:

As said fear the musk over the bite. That ish is some really dank stuff. Ive been bit enough by garters and many other non-venomous snakes to know that they can and will break the skin. For me its how quick they are that gets my heart pumping, not the bite. The biggest native snake Ive been bitten by was a good five and a half feet. The bites (thing tagged me faster then I could count) did not hurt the least but they sure bled like crazy.

The most painful bite came from my 6ft RTB and that was only because I jerked trying to outrun the bite. No dice, and he sliced me up real good.

Also you do not have to get any shots or anything. Its always a good idea to rinse any bite with water and soap though. Northern water snakes dont have any venom either but they are extremly agro and will bite and musk for fun.

i handle mine all the time, even when shes shedding, and she has never bitten me but ill find a way 2 make her and tell you how it was (im kidding)

how about don't pick up wild snakes full stop.

a garter is not going to hurt you. in defense, it will just snap at you and do pretty much no harm whatsoever.

Dude you obviously have not been around garter snakes. about a year and a half ago i went to this house in indianopolis, indiana on one of our trip to the US and the place was ridden with garters i caught every one i could and a few more besides and two of them were 30 inches long and super aggro! they would just shred you hands when they bit you. they have a terrible smell too.

Your my hero!!! i got bit by a fuull grown racer heres how it happened. i LOVE snakes so i was looking for them in some woods. and i see a tree fallen down. the branches held it up a little and there was like 2 feet from the trunk to the ground. any way under it i spy a big black tail. my addrenaline was going crazy. any way i tried to creep up on it but it saw me so i ran up (it wasnt going very fast. i pounced and grabbed it about 6 inches behind the head. man that think went crazy and grabbed my hand with its mouth and shook its head back and forth tugging really hard. i was so surprized i let it go. it stood its ground and did this weird movement were its coils start rotating. any way i got it again a little more cautiously this time. yep i got bit plenty of times but still it was fun. the but doesnt hurt too much as the teeth are super sharp.
sorry for the long boring and rather random story but i just had to brag a little:)

it's not the point. don't try and be steve irwan and try and pick up wild snakes. you don't know how they're going to react. their saliva might have bacteria that may be deadly to us. blah blah blah it's just common sense you don't pick up wild snakes or animals.
