Garter Snake

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Garters can be pretty defensive little snakes. I tried to get some pics of this guy one day when I was out fooling around with my new digital camera. This snake did not want to cooperate and I had to keep positioning it or it would slither away. It must have bit me a 1/2 a dozen times. For the most part snake bites don't phase me. Spider bites are another story. I think people who own large tarantulas are the crazy ones.

it's not the point. don't try and be steve irwan and try and pick up wild snakes. you don't know how they're going to react. their saliva might have bacteria that may be deadly to us. blah blah blah it's just common sense you don't pick up wild snakes or animals.

:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:
maybe your just saying that since aussies the land of the dangerous...venomous...

seriously,i doubt a garter would cause more harm than a water monitor (even a small one...).
ive been bitten by my monitor and i bled like crazy...honestly,i just continued cleaning his cage.

You are in australia...big difference versus the U.S. in terms of what there is to be scared of.

I bet parents there tell their kids not to be like steve irwin or they use "if you go near that ____ you will end up like steve irwin."

still, I don't pick up green tree snakes which are not venomous. I see them tonnes, but I don't have the impulse to grab it. I have been in situations where I was sitting on a chair, and directly underneath me was a brownsnake... (very deadly). at mates houses swimming in creeks when a redbelly black snake is swimming less then a foot away from your face.

you don't want to take those chances with snakes....

no. believe it or not, steve irwin was not what you would class as famous here. Most people around here know that picking up a snake is a very stupid thing to do.

I do not claim to be an expert on Snakes. But, in the past, I have "handled" animals (mostly fish) that can put a Garter Snake's nite to shame if the fish is handled carelessly. I got shredded by a Bluefish, ALMOST shredded by a Dogtooth Snapper (Whoever named it wasnt kidding) a, Oyster Toadfish (a venomous fish) and a few times got stabbed by the backward-pointing head spines on a Searobin. I also used to be immune to a jellyfish (cant remember the species. Its a coolwater species with long, purple trailing tentacles and a muddy red bell) but then I got a sting that lasted for a day and a scar that lasted for a few months. Im still immune to Moon Jellies :D
So, I'm not bragging here, I'm just sayin that I've been close to worse that a bite by a small Colubrid like a Garter/Ribbon Snake. I understand the risks. And I accept them. OK?

Wow he's a real looker. Common Garter, I think, the yellowish sides are faded into mottling.
