GATF Arrived

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I don't have much experience or knowledge about SDs but my red hooks are significantly bigger than my regular SDs.

So I have tried feeding this guy with cut tilapia two nights in a row with no luck. Just ordered some hikari carnisticks. How long can I go without this guy eating? He has to be like 4-5 days without eating as Wes would have stopped feeding before shipping.

they can go awhile, my tanzy was a bit bigger mind you, but went a couple weeks without eating when I was pellet training him

Entering day 4 of ownerships. I have been hanging cod filet via fishing line in his tank each night but he has shown no interest. I am going to try cutting smaller pieces to hang in the water as maybe it is a size thing.

Even though he is not eating yet, he does seem settled. When he was in the bag kept at the top and was "investigating" me every time I looked in. In the tank he does not really bolt anymore. When I come downstairs to the tank he seems to watch me and even come to the front of the tank. I can also go right up to the tank without him freaking out. Great early signs of hopefully a more aggressive personality than being skittish.

One thing I did from day 1 was put a light on his tank. The light I have has a 24/7 setting simulating the day. I was having some problems with algae so I have since changed it to just a low setting that stays on 24/7. I did this because the room he is in has lower traffic which has the room light turn on/off randomly whenever we go through it. With the constant light on the tank it takes away the random bright light suddenly. I know most folks recommend no light at first but hes doing well so I will go with it.

I have some hikari carnisticks on their way which I will try, and then I will probably try picking up some silver dollars over the next few days to help train him on the pellets if he continues to not eat.

Picked up 3 red tailed tin foil barbs today to help me train the guy on pellets. Had him for 6 days now and he hasn't eaten in 7-8 days. Hopefully with these guys he goes for the pellets.

It has been 6 days since I picked up the barbs. I have been feeding daily with no luck in getting the GATF to eat. it has now been about 2 weeks since he has eaten. Yesterday I did notice that he has begun schooling with the barbs and watching their behavior. When I approached the tank this morning he began swimming at the top where I drop the pellets. I think he has hit the stage that he is really hungry and it somewhat understanding that the barbs are getting food. Hopefully he tries the pellets in the next 1-2 days. Wish me luck.

Took me 2 months and 3 sets of Tinfoil Barbs to get my GATF on pellet and market prawn.
Why do I need 3 sets of barb just because the GATF kill and eat them instead of pellets :P

What size was your GATF?

My guy is only 4in. Wes told me he had all of his GATF on filet, so while I could not get him to take dead food, he had experienced it. I am curious how long such a small fish can go without eating.

Usually a lot longer than us worried owners think, so don't worry for now. If he gets extremely hungry you'll probably see from his behaviour, too.
