Was reading through some piranha threads and was reading about small fast fish as possible tankmates for piranhas. Kinda got me thinking of trying the same thing with my 3 larger gator gars. Got some white clouds, but I think my filter has been sucking them up and now there is only one left.

So I'm looking for some ideas on what else to try. I do realize that it is very likely anything I try will get eaten. I was thinking some zebra danios, tiger barbs or rosies. What do you guys think?

anything small enough...heck anything will probably be eaten by a gator gar. eventually they will swim past the gars mouth and...GONE.

i know of a 8" gator gar killing a 6" elephant nose. they will bite first than to see if its too big to eat.

get somthing cheap that you dont mind losing, then get a lot, and then keep replenishing

My Gator Gar caught and ate 7" and 8" Silver/Bala Sharks when he was 14"-16"...I think Bala Sharks are among the fastest swimming aquarium fish.

So, doesn't matter what you keep with your Gator Gars, they will try and eat them if they can.

I second Alex's suggestion.

I don't know what is cheap in your part of the world.. I would recommend a school of Silver Dollars.

Good luck,
Sid

Silver dollars aren't cheap enough that I would consider them. I'm thinking a mix of danio species, to try to get as much colour as I can. There is now another option I am thinking about, niger catfish. Everything I have read seems to suggest it would be a good tankmate for the gars. What do you guys think?

why not get alot of guppies. breed them in a 10 gallon and just keep replacing into the gar tank. cheap way of getting colour in with your gator gar.

The gators are in a 10' x 4.5' x 2' indoor pond. At least until spring. At that time they will be upgraded to a 1000 gallon or larger, depends on what's available. I already have the 1000 gallon, would prefer to go larger though.

I agree.....an excellent idea, and a good little replaceable snack for the gar.
