So being the dumb, novice, 21 year old, new the the hobby person I am I went against peoples judgement and housed a 17" alligator gar with my two male motoros. I came home from work and found my smaller male, the more active and curious one with this battle scar...

So go ahead and flame me for doing this. Do you think my ray will recover? I am currently trying to find the gator gar a new home so if anybody near Long Island is interested let me know, the gar is feeding on pellets.

Wow thats odd. Both stay at totally different regions of the tank.

yea when I first got the gator gar it stayed at the top searching for pellets just back and forth like an arowana would...

after about 2 or 3 days in the tank he got more comfortable and aggressive. Began to sit at the bottom next to the rays but payed them no attention at all. The rays were not afraid of the gar and the gar did not seem as if it wanted to even try anything. Next thing you know I come home to see that so I don't know what happened.

Yea I know, but its just odd a gar would go down for a ray. When I still had my gar he stayed in all regions of the tank especially on top though.

Rays are amazing when it comes to healing. I've seen worse and the ray recovered just fine. Keep an eye on it for a secondary bacterial infection.

Your ray should heal in no time, just increase the water changes to speed up the healing.

Rays are also known to swim up the sides of the tank they are in so that may have lead to the gar going after it. Just glad it wasn't worse.

eh no need for flaming some people put gars in with rays with no problems others dont have the best luck like yourself. the only way to find out if some of these combinations will work is to try them out for yourself as these are living things and they are all not the same. just another lesson we learn while keeping rays.

should heal just fine though as long as you keep a close eye on it and remove the gar or barricade it until you can get rid of him.

on a side note though your sand looks a little deep. might want to remove some unless you are moving it around alot. dosent need to be very deep.

thats why i say alot of people keep gars but i dont with my rays. had same thing happen just not as bad, the gar always seems to go down an fight for food with rays. unless the ray is alot bigger than gar i just dont wanna risk it. sorry for what happened. but i know most ray keepers here say go for it. gars are fine. u made the call. should heal up with no worries. just keep water clean.
