gator vs croc I

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would say the head/snout proportions and possibly the latteral line scale count could be two differences.

the snout issues are the main diagnostics...not as short or broad as a gators, more elongate with a moderately prominent second row of teeth in the upper jaw.

also, if you look carefully you can see traits of both shortnose and gators...the pattern is sort of a combination of the two fish, and the finnage tends to be somewhat similar to shortnose gar length, but with some of the striations of atractosteus gars.

i still have that specimen...albeit in a preserved state--

AH YES that nailed it. but to me only the dorsal fin seems much smaller.(frm the other pics) thanks, what was jordan saying about lateral scale count?

that was just a suspicion...

Lateral line scale counts fall within normal for Gator or Shortnosed. The odd scale count with these fish is actually in the Pre-dorsal count on the few I've counted. This tends to be on the very High end or off the "scale" for a Gator and more in line with a Shortnosed.

These fish as adults also have a unique colouration that is a direct exaggeration of both Shortnosed and gator traits. It is one of the few fish where colour is a diagnostic trait.
