GE Silicone II Window & Door IS it Safe???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Look for some stuff called silicone-be-gone. It will break down the silicone and allow you to remove it. Just be careful that you don't damage the integrity of the tank seals.

Thanks Pharaoh, but how do I get it under the tiles?
I got 1 tile up but it was a very scary.
I thought I cracked the tank several times already.

The best tool I have found is a brand new razor blade. Nothing else will lift silicone as easily. A pack is only a buck or two and has like ten in it, as soon as it doesn't cut like butter toss it and get a new one. I do not envy you though, that is going to be a major PITA for sure. However I agree with the ones who said not to risk it, better safe than sorry in my opinion.

The silicone is not only on the edges but also as an "X" pattern underneath, so I'm thinking to go out and find some sort of tool that is thin and metal with a handle.
I've already tried a spatula but it broke because it wasn't one piece.

Could you get some strong fishing line or piano wire under them? Then work it side to side until you are all the way through. They use Piano wire to break the seal on car windshields to get them out, it is strong stuff.

Interesting idea!
Don't know if it's possible tho, I do have fishing line so I'll see what happens.

If all else fails........ what if you just off the bottom of the tank entirely. since you're removing silicone, remove the outer edges that you CAN reach and dont worry about the middle. You could replace it with another piece of glass, or even some treated plywood with some safe sealant. Might be a bit easier, as you could then salvage all your slate without ruining the whole tank. Not sure if this idea is possible depending upon how much silicone was used and where.

Either that, or you can try guitar strings. That's how I separate silicone. Just find a buddy that needs a new set of strings and you are golden.
