How would jog about setting up a gecko tank? I will have an empty 10 gallon pretty soon and I'm sure I can find a tank on Craigslist if needed. I need to know just about everything on how to set up an enclosure, how to keep one, possibly how to breed, any like designer kinds?basically any info is appreciated. This will be my first reptile ever

There are designer kinds out there. Not the variety you will find with snakes, but you can find some very attractive geckos out there. Hypos are usually easy to find. Your biggest limit is the 10 gallon. There are some options for it, but many species will perfer something a little bigger.

Try searching "buy gecko online" That should bring up a variety of different websites where you can find different species and pick the one you like. There are a wide range of habitat requirements so you really do need to pick a species first

as of today my species List consists of
Arid species: Tibetan Frog Eyed Gecko (2), Leopard Gecko (1)
Tropical: Golden Gecko (1), Golden Fish Scale (2), Kochi Day Gecko (2), Gold Dust Day Gecko (2), Marble Gecko (1), Lined Gecko (1), Pictus Gecko (1), Mourning Gecko (estimated over a Dozen), Flying Gecko (2)

plus I have White's Tree frog (1), Poison Dart Frog Azures (1), Fire Bellied Toad (2), Leopard Frog (1)

No matter what gecko you decide....Always get the biggest tank you can
Arboreal Species..As Much Height as possible...
Terrestrial... as much length and width possible. My Leopard Gecko has its own 48"w x 24"width x 12" Height with plenty of stuff to crawl and climb on

Unless you want dirty glass to see through go with some sort of Tank that has doors to open to clean once in awhile. I use to use only All Glass aquariums. I have since switched over to either ZooMed or ExoTerra Tank.
Both Has their advantages..
ZooMed...Cheaper but a Single door...view Is Better without a seam down the Middle...More Chance of a Critter Escaping..No Cheesy Background or accessories
ExoTerra...Double Door...More Expensive...Cheesy Background Included...( I never use for many Reasons)..Cheesy Artificial Plants and other stuff i never use..see below
I have a External Ultrasonic humidifier..so easy to adapt...Never use the Foggers that go inside a Tank..
If you just have to use Aquariums...Keep an Eye on Your Local Petcos...They have $1 per gallon Sales quite freguently..$40 for a 40 Gallon is much nicer than over $100
Get Digital Timer....A Variety is available...look around..You can find cheep good versions
I use Natural Organic soils, Plants, Rocks, and Wood in My Tanks..
I hand Mist My Tanks ... although I do own a MistKing Misting System..but have not set it up because I keep moving My tanks around.

I usually go with a No Background since I have No artistic Talent...after many many many attempts I gave up trying to Make My own Backgrounds..When I do use a Background I use Universal Rock Backgrounds...Fantastic product and the variety is growing daily

You Want something Naturally Colorful or Dull?
Something Small Medium or Large?
Most Geckos, except at breeding Time need to be kept separate...

10 Gallon possibilities for starter reptile( not just Geckos) is Green or Brown Anole..they stay small..several can be kept in a 10 Gallon Tank..Mourning Geckos..very Small and they reproduce without Males..

Do a Web search for Reptile Shows in your Area....

I've narrowed it down to

Leopards
Chinese leopard"goniurosaurus luii"
Tokay"gekko gecko"
Yellow head dwarf"lygodactylis liteopicturatus"
Flying gecko

Tokays are extremely hard to keep alive...Majority are Wild Caught..Not A Beginners Gecko

Chinese Caves...Also Not a Beginners Gecko...Nocturnal and very shy..will rarely see

Best Visible one is the Yellow Head...Males are very territorial... Intermediate Level Gecko in terms of Care

Best Beginners is either a Leopard or the Flying..Most Visible will be the Flying Gecko
