Generator

A 4000 watt should do it, probably get away with a 2500-3000 watt. If you get a 5500 watt and have a transfer switch installed directly into your electrical box, you'll be able to run the tanks plus a lot more. Figure an additional $1000 to have the transfer switch bought and installed. $500 for the generator.

I had a 3500 w one a few years ago because were i lived in nh because we had huge ice storm and were out of power for the month. we hardwired it in to the braker box. And it ran the hot water heater, the fridge, the stove. and the electricity in two rooms of the house all at the same time. So im sure that would be big enough for your tanks. Get a good one with the 220 vault plug ins. And you can hard wire it in very easily

I think I'm going to ask my dad for a generator for Christmas, or my birthday...I don't have that kind of money just lying around!

Anyone ever buy a used generator? I'm not really sure anyone around here would be willing to give theirs up! There are a lot of military families around though, possibly if someone is moving to somewhere nice and won't need it anymore....

Looking to buy a generator to run 5 tanks with at least one filter each and one heater each.

Filters are Emperor 400
Heaters are 400 Watt Each

What would you all recommend?

honestly man if u can aford it just get you one of the portable honda generators they run like 900 bucks. But man there quite effecient produce 15 amps . My power went out other night in my house for ten hours. I ran my 46 inch flatscreen. My ps3 direct tv box lamp electric heater off it . along with my magnum 350 filter and 300 watt fluval tank heater. should be more then enuf for what u want.

thats the modle i have . if you get two they can be linked and make dubble the amperage. Theree also capable of doing 12 volt. if needed. I wouldnt buy it from that site i think there alittle high on the price. pluss the hondas are safe for electronics like laptops and tvs and such. otherwise pick up a 4000 watter generator from cosco samclub and power the whole house. Most houses only have 30 amp power suply in the breaker panle anyway.

search craiglist for used ones. take the biggest electric heater u can find with you and test it with the heater.

btt

Just get a 5000 watt one you will be fine they can run pretty much a whole house with the exceptions of microwaves and electric heat and electric water heaters. You would have to shut everything else off in order to run this stuff. I have a 5000 watt and it will run my sump pumps pellet stove refridgerator 4 fish tanks and tv without a problem. I really need to get the transfer switch to tie it into the house
