the arowana attached is very much alive though it may be so called "dead" or unable to function and live on its own it is alive, it shares the very blood vessels and arterys with its sibling. So no, its not going to fall off ever, that fish will most likely die of complications before it reaches adulthood.

Indeed you are right. Last year there was an operation to separate a pair of Asian aros similar to the pics posted here. One individual survived that operation while the other perished.
