How big will gar get in a tank?

I have a 125 gallon tank (5 feet long)

I snorkle with huge alligator gar that look like they could easily bite me in half. Very intimidating looking in the water. They just stare at me and follow me around. Even in the wild some of them like to be scratched and petted.

i like to have a gar but since you guys have some concern about feeding and jumping.. i'll pass. i think that's why i skip fishes with large teeth on them. i'm not paying for ER service just because i was bitten by my own fish pet. which shouldn't be the case since i'm the master.

try 8+ ft, i live in new orleans and i pulled a meathook out of the mouth of a 8-9ft alligator gar, i wish i had a pic to post but he strecthed across my dad's 7ft wide bay and stil had close to a ft still in the water, sucker had huge teeth and bleeding alittle but swam away very easily, then about 3 weeks later my brother & dad pulled another 7ft'er in the boat that was too messed up to put back so we ate it, took a hacksaw to cut it open and turned the meat into alligator balls(like meatballs) tasty . BUT DEFINITLY WOULD NOT LIKE THIS ANIMAL TO BITE ME, STRONG VERY STRONG AND FAST = MAJOR DAMAGE AND HOSPITAL BILLS!
