Geo cooling period?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well I guess now I only have to decide whether I want to keep a valentine, norte, yerbalito, and austrilus or if I want to do a steindechneri, hecklii, luecosticta, I think it's called a megasema and a brasiliensis with some rams and a uaru, possibly a green severum. Opinions?? What other fish come from the same region as gymnos? I really want to keep the 4 gymnos with the 4 geos. Someone told me that the cold temps were for breeding purposes only? :nilly:

Gymnos are from a temperate climate, ie seasonal change. Geos are from the tropics, temps rarely vary 10 degrees.
It would be a bit like keeping fish endemic to Indiana with fish native to
Florida. Could it work, for a while maybe. Would it be good for the fish, questionable.
I have found Gymnos kept at tropical temps are prone to disease and fungal infection.
Even braziliensus, from more southern areas of Brazil do better at lower temps than the northern species.

I'd either stick to gymnos or geos. What size is your tank? If you have a larger tank (125g+) I go the geo route, otherwise smaller tanks are better suited for gymnos since they dont get very big. As for the species you listed make sure to research them cuz they all have a variety of personalities and requirements. For instance, G. brasiliensis would beat the snot out of most of the fish you listed, especially the poor little rams.

Yeah, Kinda what I was thinking. I really like the blues, yellows and reds in the gymnos but I really like the irredecent n the geos. I have a 90 gal as of now. What about my gold spot pleco, temp wise would he be ok? What other smaller schooling fish can I put with the gymnos?

Is the gold spot pleco a L18 or similiar type? If so no it can't survive the cool down period.

As for small schooling fish there are some tetras that will work little serpae, bloodfin, buenos aires, black skirt, and a probably a couple more but can't think of. I have white clouds and rasboras in with mine.

Since you have a larger tank I'd go for at least 2 species of gymnos. There are a couple of pike and australoheros species that will work for larger fish. Check out Felipe's site to see more fish!

90 gallon would be a great Gymno tank. Its a bit small for a good number of other geos because of thier max size.Bloodfin tetras would also be a great addition as a schooling fish.

I had a couple bloodfins, somehow they became 1, haha. What about bolivian rams or even german rams with the gymnos? I would like to do 4-6 gymnos with a schooling fish and possibly some dwarf fish. Originally wanted an amazon tank but the geos all get a lot bigger than I expected =D Gonne be a living room piece so the more color the better!

Rams do not like cold. What are the dimensions of your tank? You might be able to get smaller geos like orange heads or pindaire instead of gymnos, then you have more options for adding fish.

it's a 90 gal. 4ft x 18" I really like the gymnos just because you don't see them that often. Any suggestions on tankmates? Any plecos that would work? It's a gold spot butterfly pleco btw.

There are plecos from that part on S America but you may want to try and find that variety.
Ken of fishfarm collects there, he may be able to help.
Buenos Aires might be a good schooling tetra.
I use Goodeids such as Goodeidae gracilus and Zooganotecia tequilla as tank mates, although they like the cooler water, they are not geographically correct (being from northern areas of Mexico). I also like that they generally inhabit the upper areas of the tank.
