Geophagus altifrons and fry

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Love seeing your videos I keep big bruisers and geos and i've considered many times selling the bruisers for more geos those altifrons are gorgeous, is there any tips to growing them to that large size? Mine have been 3-4" for about 6-7 months now, my deamons are 2-3-4" too

Well I stripped the fry from the male last night since there's no chance they could survive in that tank. Ended up with maybe 100 fry that are now munching on live BBS. Stripping a 10" fish is no fun!!

I noticed that too I moved mine from a 75 growout tank to the 150 and they doubled in size but haven't grown much since

That's a good sized tank. Patience ;)

At what point do you strip them Peter (how many days post spawn)?

My altifrons have spawned 3x now and the ladies seem to swallow after about a week...

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt - my female did it before too. Sometimes she just gave up and spit out the eggs. Sometimes she probably swallowed them. I'm pretty excited that they at least got it right this time :)

They are immediate mouth brooders and I didn't catch them in action this time, but I first noticed that the female was holding early in the week of 10/3 (probably Monday or Tuesday). I thought she was going to mess it up one way or the other, so I didn't pay much attention until 10/13 when I saw the fry. Not exactly sure how long but probably around 10 days.

I've stripped other mouth brooders too early before and ended up with wigglers. They were not hard to grow though - just a small tank and an air store.

Thanks Peter - I've seen mine spawning...really cool. Of course, they chose the (fake) ceramic log over all of the natural wood and other materials as their spot...

Next time I'm gonna strip her after a week or so... I never saw fry but a really full mouth.

Take care,
Matt

I've only caught them in action twice in almost two years. The second time was a few months ago in another tank and I got the end on video :D

I have had pretty good luck stripping on day 5. The earlier the better for parents with little experience. Once they get the hang of it the longer you can go 7+ days. Just my experience.

How many fry do ou think you have in total Peter?
