I just bought what i was told is a geophagus surinamensis but he also said that it probably is a altifrons since they are commonly mis-identified and the surinamensis are rare in the us, but from the pics i have been looking at online it looks like it could be a surinamensis but i am far from knowledgeable enough to correctly id it so i turn to you all

where did you get it from? its looks a lot like my suris with the single black spot however the lines in their eyes go all the way through the iris and it only looks like it goes through the upper half on yours.... im not very good at IDin geos though, hopefully one of the geo guys will chime in

Ya its not a suri but looks more like a G. abalios. Abalios and altifrons are two most often ones labeled as "surinamensis" here in the US.

It's not Altifrons in 100%.
I'm almost positive it's Abalios too.
My english is not very well, so it's hard for me to explain myself... :irked:

It will be much easier to ID this fish in another couple weeks, when he's coulors will be stronger.

I bought it from a guy in the local fish club for $5. I dont know if this helps but when it's stressed it get horizontal blotches and the fish is only like 2.5-3" so maybe that's just juvie stress coloration idk??

Also the spot on it's side is always the same size but it gets darker and lighter

It does look a lot like my abalios (purchased as Surinamensis).
