Geophagus ID???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ya i cant wait till it colors up!!

I have a couple of questions since info is kinda hard to find on these guys
1. my tank is a 55 gallon and my stocking is 1-g. abalios, 2-g. steindachneri (red hump), 3-silver dollars (not red hooks). Is this stocking alright?? i will be upgrading to a 75 gallon in the next year

2. my abalios seems shy, when ever i get home and turn on the lights he goes to the corner behind a piece of drift wood and sits on the bottom completely still for a good hour or two before he starts to swim around. Is this normal?? do they prefer dim lighting?? should i add floating plants??

3. what should i feed them?? right now they are eating Aqueon sinking pellets in the morning and i drop in a frozen blood worm cube at night, the abalios wont touch the pellets but is crazy for the blood worms and the red humps go crazy for both

1: That should be fine, that is understocked when you upgrade to the 75 gallon. Red Humps and SDs are fine, Abalios will outgrow though.

2: My Geos (got them as Surinamensis too, think they are abalios as well) are the same, they go absolutly crazy sometimes when I approach the tank, and just look utterly stressed when i have company over. BUt when its just me I can hand feed them no problem...would also like to know if there is something to solve this.

3: Sinking pellets of any sort is fine, I dont tihnk Bloodworms as a staple diet it good from what I've head.

I would also like to see an article or guide to how to identify Geophagus :)

i just feed mine the small sinking pellets as well and thats pretty much all they get, my suris were actually outgoing and not shy at all from the moment i put them in my tank, they immediately started sifting around and exploring, the "suris" i got from petco (i think are most likely altifrons) are a bit more shy but still not bad just back up a little when i first come to the tank and then come forward begging for food...some fish are just more outgoing than others though, you could try spending more time by the tank standing really close to it so they get more used to you, especially when feeding, also like stated its not really good to have him only eating bloodworm i wouldnt even feed bloodworm everyday (maybe only like 2x a week at most) just feed the pellets and once he is hungry enough and sees the other geos eating the pellets he will go for them, make sure they are small enough too, geos need a very small pellet size proportional to their bodies, they cant eat as big of a pellet as a bruiser cichlid of the same size could
