Geophagus Jurupari

I thought I would post some info on this speciece because I find it interesting.
Name: Geophagus Jurupari
Also there is the Satanoperca Luecosticta (Red Amazon SP.) but i have no Info on.
Jurupari are also refferd to has earth-eaters.
Geophagus Jurupari can grow to a maximum size of 10". They are one of the more common sp. of Geophagus. I purchased mine for $23.99 USD Wild-Caught from South America.
There growth-rate for me has been aprox. 1/4" per month.


Tank:
They need good water conditions there for I do a 25% Water change once a week.
They are good Tank mates for other large docial South American Cichlids.
Severums, Uaru , Green Terror , Acara , ect..
I keep my tank at 79F with a sand substrate, Lots of driftwood. It you have plants surround them with Rocks or he will uncover the roots.


Food:
I feed Hikari-Gold and Hickari-Staple 3 times daily.
Along with eath worms every other day and blood worms ever so often.
The rare ocasion of Tilapia, Brine Shrimp ect.


Other:
I have found mine to be docile but will hold his ground when confronted by a severum.
He eats only "Blue Neon Tetras" not the Orange or Black.

Satanoperca jurupari, by the way. They're Eartheaters, so they're much like Geophagus; but they're a a different fish, so belong to a different genus

Ummm ... those pics are luecosticta, not jurapari ... the irridesant spots on the cheeks are the give away, true jurapari don't have any there. Luecosticta's are the hobby "jurapuri" though, the ones in almost every pet store in the US ... real jurapari are rather rare, easier to find daemon than true jurapari's usually.

They are a great species (the hobby jurupari), I will add for anyone who hasn't kept these but is thinking of doing so, I would go ahead and use anti-internal parasite food on newly acquired wild caughts, because I've seen a big prevalance of camallanus and other parasites on most f0 eartheaters recently

I bought 2 small ones and put them in my growout with my sevs who promptly proceded to kill them Might try to find some big(ger) ones. Nice fish though.
