I have a chance to get my hands on a pair of pellegrini's at 2".

Anyone have any experience with these fish, and if so, any tips?

I have never seen them for sale in my country before, so i don't wanna miss out if they really turn out to be a rarity, that i can keep.

I have a spare 30G quarantine tank running that i think they could fit nicely in for a long time.

The pair is 50$

Ps. i also have the chance to get my hands on a very nice little pair of Herychthis Deppi. Would these species not go together for some reason?

Congrats! Don't see pellegrini here very often....actually, never.

I wouldn't recommend putting the two species together. Aside from water issues, H. deppi is probably going to be too aggressive.

Post pictures!!

If a geo expert like yourself bursts out saying "Congrats!" i think that was my que to go ahead and get them :p Hehe

Alright i'll take your advise and forget the otherwise great looking Deppi's.

I have a handsom pair of S. Leucosticta, at around the same size. Should there be any issues putting these in with the Pellegrini's, so i can clear out some space in another tank?

It will be a few days before i had up north again, so pictures won't be coming for some days, but they will be coming :)

I'm no expert! A compulsive hoarder perhaps :D The real experts are probably holding back their opinions pending on pics ;)

S. leucosticta are fairly peaceful fish IME, so it should work as long as there's enough room.

Cool. If they are true Pellegrini you should go get them right now. But make sure that you are actually getting pellegrini. They are often mislabled and are completely unavailable in the US. The ones for sale over here are mislable Steiny's. There are some real ones in Europe though so there is a chance that they are indeed Pellegrini.

Don't put them with the Deppi. Way to aggressive.

From what i could tell there were actually some steindachneri in the same tank, since a 2-3" Pellegrini would never have a hump nor spangles like that, atleast not that i know of.
However, it did look very much like there were some Pellegrini's in the there, a bit smaller than the steny's, but unfortunatly the "boss" wasn't in today, and i won't be buying them untill i get a chance to speak with him about it.

Thank you both for your advice, it is greatly appreciated.

Red flag!!!!!!!!!

If they came in on the same shipment they are almost certainly not Pellegrini. They are collected in a completely different location. That location is not exactly what would be called safe to collect in from what I've been told. hence the reason there are none on the market.

I have no idea whether they came in on the same shipment, but they certainly look very different from another, and are of different sizes.

I guess i can go take some pictures once i get up there, and let you guys decide whether or not to go for it

Wow, I recently had a convo about G. pellegrini with a guy who has been keeping, importing and selling fish for over 40 years and who maintains a strong interest in cichlids and he said that he's only seen a live specimen once. He also said that this fish, when in comes in, is often mixed in with G. steindachneri or G. crassilabris. I don't know about Denmark but it certainly seems like a great find especially if its personality is similar to steindachneri.

There are several exporters selling fish that are labled as Pellegrini right now. The retailers get them in and they are steiny's. It doesn't make any sense to me that they would be mixed in the steiny's either. They are from completely different collection points so I don't understand why someone would have both or if they did why they would mix them together.

I personally have never seen a live Pellegrini in person and I don't even know anyone that has. I hope that the store you are going to has some because that would at least mean there are some small ones being collected now and at some point in the future they will be available over here.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of them!!!
