GEOPHAGUS RED HEAD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
They can get to 10" expect 6-8". They breed best in small groups id go for a group of 6 and they should pair off and spawn. They are a mouth brooding species. And they take a whie to prepare to spawn but i wouldnt say that they are easy to breed though.

Unless you are taking about red hump geophagus i asumed you meant geophagus red head tapajos.

I've NEVER seen a 10" redhead! An Altifrons, yeah, but not a redhead. My alpha male is approx. 7" and is a beaut!!!!!

As far as tank size, of course the bigger the better. Personally, a 75 gal. but I always tend to overkill things. I guess a 55 would do but would you wanna live in an apartment or a nice two story brick home???

Place several smooth rocks at different angles throughout the tank to give them plenty of spawning sights to choose from. They will also spawn on driftwood and clay pots.

Unless you have a proven breeding pair I would suggest what Bruce said and buy a small group so they can choose their own mate. Just be very patient with them, they will breed eventually. Just maintain a good diet and clean water and the inevitable will happen

I agree just behind the much rarer Geophagus SP Areos.:D

Geophagus sp. Areos is an alternate classification (by Weidner) for Geophagus altifrons 'Rio Tocantins', hardly a rare species.

Regarding the Orange Heads, expect 6-8" out of dominant males, they're a smaller species of Geophagus. Like most Geophagus they're also colony breeders so you won't be getting dedicated pairs if you're keeping multiple of the same species, and unlike many CA/SA's they're also (delayed) mouthbrooders which is a trait I love.

Guess what i've just found in Blighty :D

Should be picking them up when the fry have grown on. a suggestion of 6 sounds about right.

All the geo species are pretty stunning, and show some interesting social traits.

Just to open this up some more, do all you geo keepers "over winter" your fish? lowering the temp for a few months is apparently part of their natural cycle.

I'm going to next winter, dropping it down to maybe 22-23 celcius. Make sure you don't overpay for these areos, sounds like a bit of a marketing ploy to pawn of altifrons for a few more dollars.

£4.50 for inch longs :D and their from a village outside of Hull.

Paid more for my Severums :)

In truth, i'd quite happily take altifrons for that price.

Seen Brazilicus for £15-20 at that size, and true Altifrons for not much more. Seems like this guy is cutting a handsome deal either way. (and a very nice bloke he is to boot)

Good price, as said before Geophagus sp. 'Areos' is the same fish as Geophagus cf. altifrons 'Rio Tocantins'.
