GEOPHAGUS RED HEAD

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Which would explain why i can find bugger all info online :)

Still, geos are damn rare in england, so in my eyes, geos are geos, and if i can pic up something a little unusual (regional morphs, colour strains etc) then all the better.

I've NEVER seen a 10" redhead! An Altifrons, yeah, but not a redhead. My alpha male is approx. 7" and is a beaut!!!!!

As far as tank size, of course the bigger the better. Personally, a 75 gal. but I always tend to overkill things. I guess a 55 would do but would you wanna live in an apartment or a nice two story brick home???

Place several smooth rocks at different angles throughout the tank to give them plenty of spawning sights to choose from. They will also spawn on driftwood and clay pots.

Unless you have a proven breeding pair I would suggest what Bruce said and buy a small group so they can choose their own mate. Just be very patient with them, they will breed eventually. Just maintain a good diet and clean water and the inevitable will happen
I never sia dthat they will reach 10" i said they have that potential but expect less.

Geophagus sp. Areos is an alternate classification (by Weidner) for Geophagus altifrons 'Rio Tocantins', hardly a rare species.

Regarding the Orange Heads, expect 6-8" out of dominant males, they're a smaller species of Geophagus. Like most Geophagus they're also colony breeders so you won't be getting dedicated pairs if you're keeping multiple of the same species, and unlike many CA/SA's they're also (delayed) mouthbrooders which is a trait I love.
Ive got a pair of rio tocatins, and thye lok nothing like areos, as areos are much more yellow and have a lot of blue. They also have a totally different head shape.

They're harem spawners - males typically hit about 6-7" females slightly smaller, very slow growers, like warm waters (around 84 degrees) I'd say a 60 gallon would be minimum for a male and two females, you're best off keeping them in groups of 6 of more with two males and 4 females.

Head over to cichlid-forum.com and talk to Ed Burress in the SA forum, he's pretty knowledgable on them.

From what I understand they're easy to breed. Delayed mouthbrooders, just put a flat rock in the tank when they're sexually mature.

i forget man how many did you pickk up 4 right?

that should be a nice group

£4.50 for inch longs :D and their from a village outside of Hull.

Paid more for my Severums :)

In truth, i'd quite happily take altifrons for that price.

Seen Brazilicus for £15-20 at that size, and true Altifrons for not much more. Seems like this guy is cutting a handsome deal either way. (and a very nice bloke he is to boot)

One of the two species were incorrectly labelled then if they're different fish. Post photos of both.
