Geophagus sp. aff. Argyrostictus Araguaia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Pete, from my understanding the neambi are really similar to altifrons. I read that the altifrons that are from the tocantins are now being considered to be neambi.

I was just curious why GT thought these were closer to argyrostictus instead of G. neambi. I understand G. neamni is found in Rio Tocantins, but if you look at figure 5 in the Lucinda et al 2010 paper, it's found all the way upstream and extremely close to Rio Araguaia.

According to Lucinda et al., "G. neambi differs from the species lacking head markings by the possession of eight or nine vertical, parallel bars along the flank, the bar containing mid-lateral spot bifurcate above and below midlateral blotch and by the caudal fin bearing rounded white spots".

First, Thank you all for the kind words.

Now let's answer the questions...
Have they shown any aggressive traits yet?
They are very aggressive, to each other and to the other fish.
They fight a lot with the Lapidifer.

are they pairing off or is this real aggression?
I don't fnow yet, I'm waiting just like you to see what will be.
(But I'm praying that it's pairing) :)

How are they different from Geophagus neambi?

Peter Peter Peter, always with the tough questions... :p
The truth I'm not sure what this fish it is, I Just believe to the stocklist.
According to what I've read, this is Argyrostictus Araguaia
But I'd be happy to learn from you.

Lol I've never kept either myself so I've got no experience to share. Just curious, and a little nervous too - these fish may show up in the US soon and it would be nice to know what they are.

They remind me of tahuantinsuyoa macantzatza "Inca stone fish". Anyone else notice this?

neambi or tocantins look very different from this... the one i have left does have more stripes along the sides but the colors are completely different. think of neambi as having the same number of stripes on the sides but the colors of an altifrons. these here look very blue... neambi is very green and yellowish akin to the altifrons..

I love the prominent vertical barring they are displaying in the pics. Very striking.
