They will pick up after 36-45 hours (depending on threat of other fishes) and will hold for 3-4 days before they release wrigglers for short periods and construct pits (most of the time) to house the soon-to-be free swimming fry. The fry are usually free swimming 4-5 days after pickup. At this point they leave them out for longer and longer periods until they only collect them over night (after 8-9 days). Eventually they will stop holding them altogether (after 10-12 days) and at this point they will get snacked on over night by other fish very quickly if not removed. IME it is best if the female exclusively holds for as long as possible, allowing the male to fend off other fish, though eventually the male will do the majority of the holding when the fry are larger. Sometimes both hold, and this usually doesn't work out as well if you have a lot of other fish in the tank, if not, then no worries. They normally keep the fry out in the open, sometimes in a pit and sometimes not, but always near the substrate. Good luck with them, keep us updated

Thanks guys!

Ed - they are in a 55 with just a few bleeding heart tetra dithers. The female is staying on top of the eggs and the male is fending off the tetras with ease. I guess I should removed the tetras tonight - hope it won't scare the parents into eating the eggs....

They did dig a pit around the rock. I put a sheet of egg crate under the sand and it's now exposed....hope this won't be a problem for the fry...
