A. heckelii are still classified as Geophagines based on their tribe, though they are not in the same genus as Geophagus. But then again, neither are Satanoperca. Other genus listed as Geophagines include Biotodoma, Crenicara, Gymnogeophagus, Mikrogeophagus, and Dicrossus. Technically you could call them all Geophagines.

I love any of the surinamensis complex but I'm also partial to heckelii and Satanoperca daemon. The only ones I don't care for are the hump head ones like steinys and pellegrini.

I m with surinamensis/altering complex and really love the bright reds from my Winemilleri and brachybranchus. Red heads tapajos are also very nice and I enjoyed keeping them and their beautiful finnage and head colors.

Because I keep many species from the Geophagani tribe, I don't believe you can go wrong with any of them.
Gymnogeophagus sp Paso Pache

Geogymno quilero

balzani

Acarichthys heckelli

Guianacara sp

My favorite Geophagus are probably redheads and some variations of altifrons. These are mine below

5/6inch Altifrons

I also like the satanoperca genus and have both lecousticta and jurupari but find they are really slow growers!!

Apistogramma are included in this grouping as well.
