German Blue Ram Breeding "Journal"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I love these little fish and have a pair at the moment that look interested. Imight just have a go with them in a seperate tank.

Cheers Mick

My GBR have recently started spawning.. the first time i was shocked and thought i'd steal a couple eggs just incase, but after i stuck my hand into the tank and stole 3 out of the hundred eggs, the parents started eating all of the eggs, in the morning there were nothing left...

My tank is a community tank... but it does have a electric blue jack demspey and a barchardi in there as well as 5 corys... and a fiddler crab... so all just aching to eat some tasty scrambled eggs...

The second spawn i left them overnight to see how they would do defending the eggs overnight... when i woke up about 1/4th of the eggs were gone... so i figured i'd take the eggs and place them into a breeding net square thing they sold at the pet store... ya know the plastic frame with the netting that goes around it... i also put an air line to it to keep the eggs ventilated...

First day i got home there were a few white eggs that i tried taking out, but left some cuz i couldent get all of them... Next time i came home and saw a wiggling eggs... which i then lost into the basket, but as i inspected more i noticed that there were little to no eggs left... i saw a few fish upside down in the basket grazing so i figured spawn #2 got eaten through the net... BAH!

I just got a 5 gallon tank that im cycling now... but would it be wise to transfer the couple to the 5 gallon tank before they lay eggs, or do you think the spawning would be aborted because of the move? The 5 gallon tank im going to turn into a shrimp and spawning tank... red cherries, and Sakuras...

I figure the breeding net was a bad idea now... but what would help me be more successful in breeding the fish? MOving the parents? Moving the aggressors, trying to artifically hatch the eggs again in the 5 gallon tank... or leave the entire process be and let the parents figure it out...

My tank is a 10 gallon, not to heavily planted, but its way over populated...
2 zebra danios
4 cory's small to medium sized
1 fiddler crab
4 GBR
3 Electric blue rams
1 jack dempsy
1 barchardi
2 white clouds
2 i dunno whats...
2 chinese algae eaters
1 long fined albino brushy nosed pleco

3 amanno shrimp
3 bamboo shrimp
3 ghost shrimp
10-15 cherry red and sakura shrmips...

I have a 30 gallon im preparing to upgrade to, but as of now if the fish spawn again, with all the other fish in the tank what would be the best method...

Hey peps!
I'm new to the site so just looking for sum info on the beautiful blue rams
as i have two pairs, i finally find two of each, so difficult to tell the sex's apart
one at the mo has a Rosie tummy that is fairly swollen, which i noticed today which is awesome
i have in my tank, 1 red clawed crab (which is the iffy bit with breeding them, you knew claws and all that lol 4 rummy nosed tetras 2 guppies that im breeding too 2 kuhli loaches 4 dwarf pencil fish 2 algae eaters and 2 others im not to sure about their name
so quite a mixture of fish
what are the characteristics of the female and male mating and laying eggs what to look out for

with regards =)

Well im new to the site too... but the characteristics of my ram's when they are about to lay eggs is.

1. Female and male cleaning the site, its hard to miss, i never see them doing this unless they are about to lay eggs. (cleaning meaning they stand almost vertical nipping at the gravel...

2. Female showing birthing tube... (i dunno the actual name for it i am sure i can google it but eh...) Female being the one with the rose colored belly, and birthing tube being a very small 3 mm white tube coming out of her butt hole... its hard to miss, if you look at your rams at all you should notice it if shes about to lay eggs, its kinda out of place...

3. Female swimming over nest and "shivvering"

4. male and female being more protective then usual, but during this time, they are protecting a certain area more then usual, (before and after egg laying)

That should be all the pre laying signs... i'd imagine you would be able to see the eggs post and know they had laid eggs... I found my rams could protect against almost all the inhabitants in my tank... just the sheer numbers was what got them... However they had the hardest time with snails, which they were able to push away... but my fiddler crab overpowered them, they would nip at him till he went away but he was to fast and to strong and would usually get a few before he couldnt take the nipping anymore...

Hope this helps :headbang2

What is a decent price on German Blues nowadays. I remember buying them for 10 a piece 8-10 years ago but can't seem to find them for under 30 anymore
