Getting a 550 gallon tank next week...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Only time will tell on this one. That's it. I don't buy into the "this fish is the meanest species ever and every fish is exactly the same regardless of environment or any other factor" simply because that is not the case. This oscar is a big baby, and it wouldn't surprise me if another fish attacked it. So far the Dovii has gone up against the larger flowerhorn and it was a stalemate. My 12" midas pushes him around a bit too, but everybody is pretty tame with so many fish in a tank like this. Other than the small synspilum and jack dempsey, the Dovii hasn't eaten anything else, and there are plenty of smaller fish in there that would fit in his mouth. Nobody talked me into anything, I was looking for a Dovii for quite a while to add to the mix. Glad I got him, and he is working out nicely. We'll see on the Oscar though.

I hope you are right. But since it will eventually be the largest fish in your tank, I dont see it working. Hope to see some new videos in the future with all the fish getting along "nicely".

Recently when I got my Dovii which I no longer have, there was a guy buying every fish he could get ahold of and dump it in his 220. Then he got a Dovii because it was neat and was so blue, etc. I told him not to do it but he did it anyways. 3 months later almost all of fish were killed. After he finally thought the situation over he got rid of it, that was after he killed or ate his fish. This Dovii was supposedly 16".

You keep saying nicely, I dont understand how he fits in nicely when you post photos of him with fish in his mouth and a beat up Oscar, nicely means he fits in without issue, you are have issues and he is resolving them for you. Just because there are other fish in your tank that are smaller doesnt mean anything, well actually it does, it means he hasnt gotten to them yet, which he will. You watch and see, I speak from experience :)

Meanest fish ever, its iffy, I had the Dovii and Umbee that were both over 5lbs, they were both glass bangers and would demolish ANYTHING that was put into their tank. Who would have won out of the two, who knows and I didnt want to find out. It doesnt have to be the meanest fish to kill a fish.

Right now, he is probably confused a little because of all the fish so it makes it harder for him to pick on just one, but he will find that one he dont like and wont leave its alone untill it dead, then he will start on another one and so on. I bet if you left that oscar in there, he would be dead by now.

I wonder how Dovii and other fish survive in the wild? You know, with the Dovii attacking everything and stuff. lol Have you looked at the other fish in my tank? They are all tough and one person or another on here claims that IT is the meanest fish alive and it can't exist with anything else, whether it be Dovii, Buttikoferi, Managuense, Flowerhorns (OMG I have two in there), Oscar, Bocourti, Midas, Trimac, or any other fish.

So this guy put a 16" Dovii in a 220 gallon tank with other aggressive fish? This is a 9 inch Dovii with other fish of similar size in a 400 gallon. Big difference. I'm not saying it will work forever, but it is working right now. I highly doubt I will wake up to 20 dead foot long fish at any point. It's been 7 weeks so far, and only two fish which I'm sure he considered feeders were eaten. The oscar, well, we will have to see. Just because a fish "can" doesn't mean he "will". If that was the case, Brock Lesnar and Mike Tyson would have eaten all the humans by now. lol

I have more conflict with a couple of two inch paratilapia polleni in my 125. They must be super aggressive too and everything will die in that tank. :)

I sure have, and I hated you because you had a Bocourti and I didnt :)

You know how it is on here, one person hears something and they think its right. I had better luck with a Dovii than a Butter, if a Butter got as big as a Dovii, I would put my $$ on a Butter.

There is no real way to measure what the meanest fish is, I mean does someone have a scale or something on how its measured? Not at all, everyone is just going by their experience and what their favorite of the two are. Just like what is better, Chevy or a Ford? Well I'm a Chevy guy so of course I'm going to say Chevy but is it really? :)

Yea with all sorts of stuff such as a Red Devil, 2 Flowerhorns, Dempsey, Syns, 3 Jags, a young Umbee at 5", 4 different Oscars, RTC, Tiger Shovel, etc. He knows I visit the place so he went there before I would get there to buy all the fish before me. He also had to Wolf fish and his favorite was the Rainbow. Then he added a motoro that was just a pup but he got killed by the others. Then he started to notice the Dovii being aggressive to the others and then there they went.

At least you know this isnt a long term solution. If I was able too, I would have LOVED to put the Dovii and Umbee along with all my other South and Central Americans in there, talk about a nice setup. But I knew that would have never had worked, EVER.

OH yea, he also bought 2 pbass from me and a polleni which I should have never sold him had I know where they were going, all three are dead and he blamed it on me because I sold him sick fish, go figure. :screwy:

Tank is doing great. Dovii is growing like a weed, and is about 12 inches now. He is not showing any killer tendencies yet and seems to get along fine with everybody so far. Rescued an 18 inch arowana too which has been in there for about a week now. So far no issues with him yet either, though he isn't eating yet. The gar is now devouring the cut up pieces of tilapia that I throw in for him and the Dovii. Good times. Here are a few new pics:
