I orders a new emperor 400 from big als.. the first one came absolutely useless nothing happened at all when i plugged it in i took it apart put it back together nothing. Now i just received the replacement to that one and the spray bars that drive the bio wheels aren't working I'm going to get sick of this real fast. I'm calling marineland tomorrow to see what they can do for me i guess, unless anyone on here has any ideas as to why the spray bars wouldn't be going?

Did you prime it? As in fill up the biowheel before turning it on? Personally marineland has probably the best service out there, they'll send out parts extremely fast and will replace items no questions asked, sometimes even without a reciept.

Ok I discovered why this is happening. I looked on the internet and apparently im not the first one this has happened to so I'll just post this. It shipped with a missing part. That is a flow manifold cover that directs some water up the tube into the spray bars. I managed to fix this on my own because the other one that i recieved that didnt start at all i still havent shipped away.. and that one did have this part. So when i send it back it will be missing parts.. but i dont think they should give me to much trouble considering they are shipping them out that way.

Is the impeller installed? Is the suction tube pushed down firmly over it? Are the spraybars pointed at the bio wheels? (assuming they are indeed spraying) If not they can be redirected with the knobs at each end. I have that same filter. When I opened the box one of the spray bars was missing. I called them and they replaced it free of charge.

I've noticed its a damn hard filter to get started. Even when primed with water it sometimes doesn't start for several minuets. With mine, the water level has to be a minimum of 4 inches above the secondary intake for it to even work. I don't know what to think about these filters.

Mine seems to be fine now... After a bit of headache in the beginning there seems to be nothing wrong at this point. I'm curious now as too how long it's going to last hopefully it changes my opinion of the company with its longevity. And your right about priming mine also takes a lot of water to get started, but it's not too much of a hassle usually.

My choice of HOB are the AquaClear 101's.....Less moving parts and big space to stuff mechanical filtration media.....
