Getting into Salt Water, with an octopus!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Im up in Navarre, between Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola.

After what BP did Id be damn pissed if FWC decided to give me a fine for taking sand. I would like to see the laws about it still.

OK made some phone calls, it is NOT illegal to take live sand from FL. Live rock yes, but not sand. We dont have "live rock" like found in reefs up here. Actually no natural rocks period. Pretty much the only rocks you see up here are chunks of asphalt, concrete and cinder blocks so Im pretty sure those are legal to take.

Saying that, whats the best way to collect? Dont tell me to go to the pet shop, the closest one that I know of that sells live sand is a 45 minute to an hour drive. In Five minutes I can be in the sound or the Gulf.

My original intent on him was to be used for bait so I guess I will just give it my best

Why would you even share your story with fishkeepers? Youre basically abusing a poor octopus because he was going to be bait anyway? I feel sorry for the octopus and anyone else that has to deal with your actions. Just horrible.

Many if not most fishkeepers are fisherMEN/WOMEN as well.

The part is in bold is a little over the top you think?

I'm going to guess chunks of asphalt would leach some serious toxic chemicals. That stuff is nasty!

Ironic, the bay is called East Bay! lol

Possibly but it doesnt stop delicious oysters from growing on it. Oh well, its still fun, no matter the outcome. Going to get him a small live shrimp to eat today and see what he does. That is if its ok for Oscarum...

I live in Fort Walton for a few years and I know alot of people who got their beautiful white sand from the beaches. I knew a guy who made his own rock and put it in a mesh bag and hung it off a dock for a few weeks then into his tank it went. I believe he got the recipe for making the rock online somewhere. I'm sure a good search would do the trick or maybe even on here someone may have done it also.. If I remeber correctly he said it cost him about .20 cents a pound which is amazingly cheap.. Just an option. I plan on doing this when I move back to that area in a couple of years.. Good luck.
