The more plant growth you have, the more nitrates you pull out. Plants want nitrogen for their proteins so it should work out. One could run a simple hydroponics system, who wants to grow lettuce in their sump?

Once you start keeping the bigger fish you'll see what i mean. Another member did a pretty extensive testing on pothos with an Oscar. Found very little to almost no benefit.
Im actually setting that up next. I'm going to grow lettuce and kale for my tortoise and us if it works out. I know people who raise tilapia and umm greens and water is very low nitrate. So it can remove nitrates at a high rate depends on how fast the plants grow or bud/flower/fruit. I've also been told to clip portions to cause it to heal that takes energy too. When I get done redoing my "sump" I will split the pothos and see if that has a larger effect. Hydroponics isn't feasible for us planted tank people, but if you get it right plants slurp nitrates
