Getting my very first Africans tomorrow!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its also a good idea to get a extra filter or bigger filter than what the tank will normally need. For example on my 30 gallon i have a 60 gallon size filter. For both my large tanks i have double what i would normally use, it helps to keep the water quality good when keeping larger numbers of fish as we often do with african cichlids. I also skip normal feedings at least once a week sometimes two days (not in a row) it does not hurt the fish and on those days i noticed they really dig the substrate and around the rocks looking for food, this helps to keep the tank cleaner too.

I may trade the C. Afras for the Acei, I'll see when I pick up my fish tomorrow, and talk to the breeder about it. I'm lucky to have a breeder that is downsizing close,to me, and a fantastic LFS that specializes in Africans. I can get rare without the shipping costs that are so prohibitive. I am also trying to hit a Cichlid club auction on Sunday, just to look around (not even bringing my checkbook!!).

Thanks for the advice...I do appreciate it!

have fun!! and make sure to give us a heads up on these rare fish, and if the lfs ships :D:D lol

Your welcome . here is a pic of my acei. I wish i still had them.

My assumption is that her LFS is Dave's rare aquarium fish, seeing that she is in San Antonio, just a guess though.

yup, your right

She is fortunate that she doesnt have to pay shipping, but anyone who knows dave's, knows that he makes his money anyway...sheesh

Great choice on Labs as your first African Cichlid! They have to be one of the most vivid freshwater fish for a beginner cichlid tank and they are easy to breed as well--just so long as your male to female ratio is adequate. Are you planning on putting all 16 fish in your tank all at once? If you have a camera you should post a pic of your tank setup.
