What is everyone's thoughts on getting rid of fish to get new fish?

I know there are some who keep fish for life. They see their fish as a life long companion.

I just want to try new fish out. With all of the different fish out there it isn't feasible to keep a fish for 20 plus years or have 500 tanks for each and every fish because I don't want to give them away.

I have goldfish now in a 180 and I'm thinking of something different. With goldfish it isn't like I can get away with a Pbass or somehting like that. I would make sure they get a good home even if it took months. I feel a little guilty to an extent, but I don't think I should keep a fish for years if I don't enjoy them. Its not like I enjoy the actual tank....its the fish in them.

How does everyone feel about essentially "getting rid of fish" to getting a different kind?

People do it all the time! Wouldn't be a fun hobby if you were stuck with the same fish for 25 yrs.

Eh i dont see it like that especially w/ goldfish.. idk sorry if you love goldfish but pbass would be an upgrade for sure. I get rid of fish if they become a problem in the comm, or if they are too normal. I dont buy normal fish for that reason because i know i wont want them in a month

People say you should research as much as you can so you know the fish is right for you and your tank. I think you never really know until you have had it. I personally never get rid of fish I hate the thought of it. If you are going to find a new home and you know they will be well looked after go for it. Your happy the fish are happy.

Being in a place like Hong Kong, even if i didn't want to keep a certain monster, there is no where for them to go... so i tend to keep all the fish i buy till the day they pass away, be it a few years or over a decade or two...

In this town, if you drop off a big fish at an LFS, chances are that within a week or sometimes less, the store will call you to pick it up and take it home or they'll kill it or do whatever they see fit with it... since not many people have large enough tanks to house monsters...

Thats why when i buy fish, i make sure to buy fish i want to keep in the long run... especially since there are already quite a few monsters at some of the LFS' i've seen sitting in the same small tanks for 5 years or more...

I feel you man... but you know what, many people buy tons of fry..raise them and sell them just for a business. :D think about it ! :P

Depends on the manner in which you choose to dispose of them.

OP, these aren't directed toward you. Just my general thoughts on the subject.

If you sell the fish to responsible keepers, IMO there's nothing wrong with it.

If you trade with someone, that's cool too.

If you use a growout as a feeder fish, I personally have no qualms about this. I'm guilty of it myself. Often unintentionally, but not always. Troublesome centrarchids are the ones who found themselves in this predicament most often. Also, a pearl gourami that seemed to think it was a piranha when it saw fins.

Killing it just because you're tired of it? Not cool man, where's your sense of loyalty? That animal depends on you to live, and you kill it? That's disgusting and a waste. At least feed it to your big fish!

Releasing it into the wild? Especially when it's a species that can thrive in your area? That's really low. Just kill the damn thing.

Is there any fundamental difference to the fish if you kill it cus you're tired of it or feed it to your bigger fish cus you're tired of it? Assuming you are not giving it a slow painful death? Dead is dead, right?

At least it's serving the purpose of being a good meal. Much like in nature. I've certainly let my big boys eat a couple of grow outs or fin nippers before but I would never have just killed them.

There's only one tank in this house that has remained the same for years and even then it's seen it's fair share of fish. As for how to dispose of fish, I have quit on some community tanks and just fed everyone to the bigger guys. Don't see why not.
There's nothing wrong with wanting to try something new.
