Getting rid of fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are so many forum to sell, give or exchange your fishes with others. Why not do it. U get them a new owner.

I'm in the same boat except my reason for getting rid of the fish is a selfish one. Female flowerhorn that won't lay for my male anymore and has one bad eye. I'm thinkin my only option is give it away for free either on here or my lfs. I'll still feel guilty either way.

u should keep the fish u buy, ur responsibility. Might as well give away ur kids to foster parents. BTW cichla would defo be a downgrade, goldfish are far better, hands down

Depends on the manner in which you choose to dispose of them.

OP, these aren't directed toward you. Just my general thoughts on the subject.

If you sell the fish to responsible keepers, IMO there's nothing wrong with it.

If you trade with someone, that's cool too.

If you use a growout as a feeder fish, I personally have no qualms about this. I'm guilty of it myself. Often unintentionally, but not always. Troublesome centrarchids are the ones who found themselves in this predicament most often. Also, a pearl gourami that seemed to think it was a piranha when it saw fins.

Killing it just because you're tired of it? Not cool man, where's your sense of loyalty? That animal depends on you to live, and you kill it? That's disgusting and a waste. At least feed it to your big fish!

Releasing it into the wild? Especially when it's a species that can thrive in your area? That's really low. Just kill the damn thing.

I agree w/ chic as i didnt go into much detail on my first post. I have 3 diff troublemaker eaters. My water snake eats dead or sick fish, and if someone becomes a problem, like chic or strollo i drop em in w/ the red hi fin wolf and ornate bichir. I did that once and took him back out, and now the 3 inch gymno balzani doesnt pester my threadfins nearly as much. My red put the fear of god into him haha.

If i simply dont "like" a fish anymore ill trade it at an lfs or to another hobbyist. Never did this with a large fish, all of my large fish (ornate, red hi fin, gold dust bichir tomorrow!) I love far too much to ever sell or trade. Unless something was messing w/ my bichirs. My bichirs are my babies.

Eh, many dont see it that way. a fish is like any other pet, if its causing trouble and you cant fix it you get rid of it. My father and grandfather always taught me, if your dog bites someone you shoot it. As a sign of good faith to the person it bit, you give the thing the lassie treatment. Ive already had to do this when i was 10 w/ my coydog (native reservation dog, looked like a coyote). Which was my first dog so i may have been hardened to making tough choices w/ pets at an early age. ( i didnt put it down my father did)

So i dont think your comparison to getting rid of children works out at all, your children are obviously a much bigger commitment.

All in all, do your research! If its gonna get too big or too mean dont get it! But there are always those moody little guys that want nothing more then to mess with the other fish day in and out. Feed em, or trade em. Use them for something other then needless death

For goldfish you can find someone with an outdoor koi pond :)

A fish doesn't have my genes or will ever buy me a "#1 Dad" mug.

HAHAHA, BEST reason to have kids... still waiting for my mug though.

I personally like to keep fish for their entire life, especially if I raise it from a juvenile. But nothing wrong with trading or selling fish to switch things up. I doubt fish form an attachment to their owners the way a dog does.

Take them to a homeless person. Goldfish probably taste just like carp, and would make for an excellent meal for the poor.

Remember the Simpsons episode where Mr. Byrnes had to eat the three eyed goldfish?

I love it how you guys just feed unwanted fish to your big fish. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's wrong, It's just a bit of a weird concept for someone with an angelfish as his biggest fish lol.
