getting the pond started soon just .......1,236 gallons

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
OK Josh, first I used the pool with the inflatable top ring but have considered moving up to one of those you are looking at(just got to get it past the wife without serious harm being done). Second, a number of people have used those types without putting additional liners in, they are pretty tough. For filtration I bought a submersible pump from Home Depot that had large openings to handle larger sized debris. Ran a piece of reinforced hose out with a tee and valves for easy water changes. Hose goes into the top of a 32 gallon rubbermaid can. On the inside of the lid is a 4 way connector to spread the water out. The water falls on to a coarse pond filter held by a hamper lid. This sits on top of a plastic hamper filled with plastic pot scrubbies and sits about four inches off the bottom. A fitting at the bottom returns the water. There is also a smaller submersible pump that is just for current. Both pumps sit on a plastic shelf. The smaller on tends to swing around some so the current direction is variable. Had a titanium heater in the pond but it quit just as we had a cold snap. Only had a 400 watt heater to use plus tarps over it at night. Even with water temps dropping below 60 everyone survived. I don't recommend trying this at home as I was very worried about the cat, pacu, and aro. I also don't know if there will be long term damage. Any other questions just let me know.

I've heard of two people who had theirs leak. I'm not saying it's common, but better have it safe than sorry. A thousand gallons on the floor is not good ;)
It also gives extra insulation. Pretty cool filter idea too by the way :)

Safe than sorry is always better, particularly inside. I got the filter idea from some of the people on here and just modified it to fit my needs.
