and ya i should have ordered the darn thing with the bottom drilled and my life would be gravy. but thats not what happened so i'll keep my raincloud following me around awhile longer.

I know it works. It only worked if it has a siphon break, which yours does. What I was saying is that if that siphon break fails it will make for a wet floor. I was also stating that skimming is a good idea.. but yes your idea will work .. it just has the opportunity for failure
there is no siphon break. (hole in the p/u). it doesnt need one. once you get to the "T" its just an overflow. once the water in the outer upward pipe and the tank are equal the siphon stops itself.
www.Glass-Holes.com has overflows that are drilled at the top of the tank...check them out, it's what I use...and it was drilled with a totally overstocked tank...unstopablepuffers;2820560; said:
Shrug, I don't see it. If there is a vacuum in the pipe that causes a siphon then the siphon will continue until the vacuum is broken. Now if your flow is minimal enough to allow air to replace the water in the pipe from the output, then you have a siphon break. Most people use a hole in the T section of the pipe to be a siphon break. Either way, I was just offering my opinion. Good luck to you, I hope it works out well. This is an awesome hobby for DIY
it works like an overflow box really. the upward outer pipe being the box and the "T" is the box drain to sump
i would have to drill my bottom as the top has reinforcements around the top about 2". and thats too low for my liking.
a siphion only works if the top of liquid wants to be pulled down the tube by gravity.if the liquid on both sides is the same depth it will stay static until one or the other changes.

That is only true when working with two bodies of water. they will euqal out "level" when attached with a siphon. However in your picture, the pipe can easilly be replaced with a hose. It's in a vacuum environment, as long as the siphon is created by teh gravitational pull the hose will continue to drain the water. It doesn't matter how many loops or rises you put in it as long as the exit of the hose is lower than the level of your water. The is completely based of your drawing. You might be getting lucky with an air pocket in the t breaking your siphon.. btw if you do have a way to remove the air from the pipe, how are you starting the siphon?
there is 2. the tank and the pipes outside the tank. yes it could be done with hose. try this. take your hose for cleaning your tank, start a siphon, then raise the drain end only above water level. you will see that the water in your hose and the tank are equal. then picture a "T" at that level, and increase the water level. what will happen? the water will run out the "T" keeping the tank at the same level.
