ghetto fish tanks!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I used a piece of clear 1/4 in. plexiglass for a lid before. It took only a few weeks for the heat of the lights and the weight to warp it. If I hadn't niticed it, my lights would have fell in the tank and caused a lot of trouble. I got a real lid and left the plastic alone.

oh my! well my plastic is cut to size and the light and bulbs say they don't burn hotter than 60'. the lights also extend past the lip of the tank on both side by about an inch i'd dare say. the plastic was just installed to keep water off the bulbs.

the lamp broke on my the canopy for my 20 gallon so i went to walmart and for 7 dollas bought an 18" under cabinet light that even has a switch on it.

really you think it will warp? how come you think that?
Plexiglas bends in the direction of highest humidity due to the expansion on the side with more moisture. add some weight from lights and your lid will bend down very quickly. The sides of a plexiglas tank obviously has the water pushing the sheet back so you don´t notice the effect in that case.

One of my tanks (the 5 gallon paludarium) has a plexi glass lid and I am constantly flipping the plexiglass, or it warps up and all my little froggies escape.

hopefully this plastic will make due. it seems to be going great so far, its been up almost 3 weeks now and 0 warping!
