I Quote
"In addition the fishsiam.com team captured the entire catch and release of the creature on video which we shall soon be releasing on the net."

I think its a Himantura chaophraya
Maximum Size: 197 inches (500 centimeters), 1,323 pounds (600 kilograms), body diameter 95 inches (240 centimeters)

Thanks. Seeing is believing though. Not sure how I'd feel after being string up through the nose- probably not too energetic.

where was a 1300lb specimen caught? is that just an estimate?

Thai Freshwater rays are said to reach over 1000lb but according to locals nowadays the bigger specimens to be found in the Bank Pakong River are around the 550 lb mark. On one web site an angler hooked one and played it for 14 hrs and still didn’t land it.

All giant freshwater stingray captured by the fishsiam team are safely released after capture. The method used for securing Giant freshwater stingray whilst still being retained in the river involves a strong chord being placed through the creatures spiracle. The fish is then allowed to recover fully submerged in the river before release. All of our captures of this highly understudied fish have resulted in the successful release of the stingrays after capture. We are currently conducting research on this most fascinating creature and sharing information with Dr.Zeb Hogan mega fish project and other scientific agencies.A tagging program has been discussed which would reveal if GFS are true freshwater fish or venture into marine enviroments as previously suggested. In addition we have been requested to collect tissue samples for comparisson with GFS found in S.Australia by a doctor from the S.Australian Museum which have always been presumed to be the same species. Previously no scientific comparisson has ever been made of GFS from both continents. These proposed studies are subject to approval from the relavent agencies in Thailand. We shall shortly be releasing footage of several of our recent Giant freshwater stingray captures showing all aspects of the capture and release of these magnificent creatures.

i'm surprised they haven't stung anyone yet. or they chop off their tails? I'm guessing not if they're released alive right?

I still have doubts on how well they do after they are released. the accumulation from the lactic acid may not be apparent initially, but the battle, and held down., could lead to internal organ hemorrhage or worse.

try stringing your pet s.a. ray to a rope for several hours, and pull it around the tank against its will., see how well it does after. and remember, these fish are hundred times bigger, which means more work to try to break free. i'm skeptical.

catch and release sounds noble, but in reality its less
