Is anyone in the US breeding these guys? I'm thinking of raising mine as a group for this purpose (Red tails) - as opposed to selling off 2 of them. Has it been done before?

What size do they become mature? Most other gouramis are pretty simple to breed, so I'm hoping for the same on these guys, just a tad bigger (lol)

If I was to do this, would there be much demand for fry? Say, on MFK?

I believe they are mainly aquacultured in countries such as India, Sri Lanka, Philippines, etc.. as food fish, as well as aquarium trade. I've yet to see a source in the U.S. that supplies these.

I've read that they become mature at four years of age, and by then they should be very close to or achieved their maximum size of 28" (70cm). I've read that they prefer to use misc. leaves/twigs and such to build their nests which are 12"x8".

Their eggs are bouyant which was interesting to read.

I'm hoping I have a pair as well, so that I can keep them in a pool for breeding. Let me know how your project goes I'd be very interested in sharing info because I know our gouramis are close in size, so I guess we'll be going through this at the same time :)

I don't know how much demand there is on MFK alone, but they don't usually last long in the LFS's around here (San Gabriel Valley).

I'm interested in a line breeding program to promote various traits such as yellow scales, or more blue in the face, or trying to get as much blue on the body as possible. :D

First interested party here :)

I would be interested in owning a Giant Gourami at some point.

Cohazard - sounds like a sweet plan for the two of us! So far I have 4 redtails, 2 golds, and 1 gray. Maybe even get into giant gourami HYBRIDS LOL!!

I don't know about hybrids... maybe dabble in them for personal research, but I would want to keep the ones in aquarium trade pure.

I've only got two RTGG right now, but I'm getting ready to move. As soon as I do move, I'll look into getting leucistic, gold, and grey gouramy and keep a sharp eye out for exodon, if you find some exodon before I do let me know, I'll pay for shipping lol :)

Let's help each other find (and split shipping?) on exodons and septemfasciatus (A new one I just found out about.)

The gold goramy are the leucistic ones, right?

And I'm with you on keeping the strains and the species pure. I was only kidding.
I do wonder if there's a piebald out there....

I wonder if theres a way to get a sort of pseudo-piebald by looking into hybrids, but we'd have to be careful. :)

I thought I tipped you off on septemfasciatus in one of the other threads? :naughty: From what I could find on the net, they don't look too much different from regular grey O. gouramy, but I guess we'll have to find some and raise them to find out.

I like the idea of being one of the first aquarists to keep and provide a lot of info on a rare uncommon Giant Gourami. :)

I bet if we talk to some of the vendors, we can find something.

Cohazard - it must have been you who mentioned septemfasciatus.

None of the vendors EVER respond to my RARE fish lists that I post on here ... Maybe one or two with the less-rare ones but that's it. Not a single fish has been filled from that list... Have you had any luck in that direction yourself?
There are fish coming in from Asia all the time, so... let's get our heads together and figure this out.
