I think evryone of you guys know how strong arapaimas are. Looking at that is just amazing and incredible.

My guess is he broke the fishs neck with a bite?

for the length of that pima it looks like death was cause by somethin else cause the pima looks very bloated just an observation :D if not i wanna add a giant otter to my collection lol

I am going to guess the otter did not catch the arapaima for a few reasons:
The fish has fins and the otter feet, the water in which that size fish would be found would not allow footing for the otter and the arapaima would have a considerable advantage.
The otter lacks claws like a big cat to grip and hold making it near impossible for it to latch onto the arapaima long enough to deliver a death bite to the spine.
There is very little possibility of an otter that size dragging a fish of that weight out of the river (where they normally feed I believe).
Otters are wary and shy. In the picture there is a boat in the background so I am guessing he is snacking on a fisherman's catch and is a tame otter. Or at least one that has lost its fear of humans.

Just my 2c.

Giant otters are amazing and fantastic predators. Its terrible they are endangered now:(

Hard to imagine the otter taking down that arapaima, even in a group, arapaima are just so powerful. Might be that the arapaima was already dead?

On the other hand, giant otters are incredible hunters, snack on those flesh-ripping piranhas, then getting its buddies to dine on a mighty anaconda. Another group of otters meanwhile take down an adult caiman snapping at them with massive and lightning quick jaws for supper.:)

That otter did hunt the arapaima. There is an entire documentation about it. That otter was raised in captivity and lives near a village there. He got the arapaima in deeper water and forced into more shallow waters. Those otters have extreme strength and they are very intelligent. They are the apex predators in the amazon. They hunt down anacondas, caimans and even medium sized bullsharks.

I love those guys:
