It looks like one of the water scorpions I caught as a kid more then a diving beetle.

compared to Diving beetles:

theyre both ambush predators that can kill prey their own size if desperate enough. They also shouldn't be bothered by water quality as they breathe through a snorkel in their abdomen (the part that resembles a tail) I've never been bitten by a water scorpion even when i poked their mouthparts so no idea where the bites . I believe that the diving beetles are the biters. I caught a 3 incher once so expet a little more size in the future. I have not seen a water scorpion that could fly as of yet.

I caught one of those long ago I heard from a bug guy they are rare and they do eat fish. That front end is made to catch and hold on to fish. I would make sure it has some area to get out of the water. They mostly live in swamp areas

I found one of these in my garage about a year ago. I scooped it up and threw it in the pacu pond. He actually dove down and fought back. They got him, but boy did he put up a hell of a fight.

Ive seen these on youtube! the larva stage is really cool to see. they can fly but I think they need a way to get fully out of the water to do it tho, so if theres no way for them to i dont think they can. You are a good dad tho :)

LOL,in your garage?..Somehow I have a feeling that the one you encountered was a different species from the one that is being discussed here.

I have a pic of it, but it is on my old phone. I'll post a pic later. I don't know what else looks like that.
