6 of 7 giraffe catfish got an upgrade to 25K gal. 4 came from 4500 gal, 2 wittei/congo (one 28", the other named "Happy" 30", say hello to Kevin and Paige Beetlebug515 Beetlebug515 Paige Paige ) and 2 bouche, 20". 1 from 1800 gal, the niger, 20". 1 from 240 gal, female volta, 20". Only the male volta was left in 1800 gal due to smallish size of about 15".

I really enjoyed your video which made me research the Volta, and ultimately led me back to this very thread.

If I may humbly ask for your expert opinion, what do you believe these two are?

Thank you.

Thank you for watching our humble channel. These are without doubt what we currently know as biscutatus, the smallest growing Auchenoglanis species. I am about to publish a comprehensive video on the Auchenoglanis species ID. Stand by, please.

Thanks for the reply. I had these guys in a 75G growout but they were just too shy to compete for food with the jaguar chiclid fry I had in there. I have since put them in a 40G to target feed them and in a few months time frame they have had a much better growth rate. I was going to eventually sell one, but now knowing they are biscutatus I will eventually house both of them in my 210.

I'm looking forward to your video!

Our personal, experience-based, humble amateur "revision" of the genus of Auchenoglanis giraffe catfish "recognizing" 5 species that we see in the aquarium trade.

Answers to the eternal questions:

- Is my giraffe catfish a dwarf species?
- What species is it?
- How big will it grow?
- What tank is proper for it?
- Will it outgrow my tank?

Species ID pointers.

- biscutatus
- bouche
- niger
- volta
- congo/wittei

Hey,
I am watching the video right now and I must say it is very informative!

Now this fits the topic quite well:
A friend of mine asked me if I want to take his Auchenoglanis since my tanks are larger than his and the Auchenoglanis uproots his plants.
Here are the photos that are available right now:

It's from the same importer my specimen came from but contrary to my Auchenoglanis it apparently is growing very slowly.
It was sold as biscutatus like mine but since my specimen turned out to be a cf. occidentalis I doubt this one is a biscutatus.

Hi Xeno, thank you for this. IDK why you mention cf. occidentalis, unless they are all "cf. occidentalis" except the biscutatus and wittei :)

Your fish are what I call the Volta. I've included your fish into the analysis, I hope you saw it.

This one is too Volta. Growth rate is subject to many variables and you know the saying "Every tank differs". It could be the gender thing, or the feeding. I've no doubts about your fish and your friend's fish ID as Volta.

Some more footage, some good closeups, of the Niger and the Volta giraffe catfish. Intermittent problems with tank mates bullying the Niger g-cat in 4500 gal. The Volta pair wouldn't accept the Niger in 1800 gal:
