2nd week with my giraffe catfish and he is doing great! Never seen a more interactive catfish so far. He seems to know I am feeding him when I wave his food in front of him and he go all active after seeing the food. Going to post some pictures later
 
Giraffes are certainly one of my favorite cats. If I could get away with one with my rays I would but they get pretty pushy when it comes to feeding time.
 
Just google imaged them they are so funny looking. They look like aliens very cool though. If you google image it there is one coming out of the water and having its nose rubbed.
 
Yep, they are really pushy. The bichirs that are in the same tank as him end up eating off the surface as they are usually pushed away by my giraffe during feeding
 
I don't like negative labels. Call them over-zealous chompers :) That's what they are. Gentle, really, but don't stand between them and their food.
 
What's the growth rate like on these guys?

How much of a threat to smaller tank mates are they?

Fast to 1'-1.5'. ~A year from say 3". Then slow. Utterly non-predatory, expelling an accidental small fish out of their gills as they sift the substrate... unless underfed. But they are powerfully built, muscular. If there is food, they will get "zealous".
