Giraffe VS O.niger

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had the niger, the giraffe, and the vulture. I would not do any of them if you want to keep them long term. They all are food aggressive and will take most of the food from the slower fishes. The vulture will be aggressive toward the other fishes. Mines attacked my fly river turtle and caused some major damage. A 180 gallon tank is fairly small when you are talking about those cats. You should stick with the larger synodontis and smaller pictus cats. They will look proportional to the tank. Otherwise you will have a real monster in your tank. Good Luck.

If i am not mistaken o. Niger is the 4 foot catfish i see at public aquariums... If i am mistaken and that is another species i take this back but something that can get 4 foot (realistically) is not suitable for most home aquariums. And do not come at me like "oh this guy has a 10,000 gallon tank!" Or something like that. I didn't say not suitable for all home aquariums i said most.

from what i've scene/read about dwarf gcats is that like the regular gcats they are unpredictable on what type you get. plus they grow to slowly and hide a ton.

I have a dwarf giraffe, unsure of species. It's grown reasonably well, about 3-4 inches in the 3-4 months (ish) I've had it. Mine has moved from a 2 foot to a 4 foot and now its in the 180. After each move its been very shy and almost unseen for a week or 2. Once settled though its been out and about all the time, which is a pleasant surprise.

I have to disagree with the jurense being boring, mine had loads of character but they do need you to put the food virtually in their mouth unless they are starving! IMO I think rays are what you are looking for, my female motoro was very active she even used to "surf" at the surface on the air bubbles from my bubbler, and hand fed! If you can be bothered with the extra water changes to keep your water really clean then rays are 1 of the best fish you can keep IME
