ok,these things are tuff to catch.
so lets hear your tips.

i use topwater lures with treble hooks.
pull it across the water and they chase it.
then i slow it down and they hit it,i pull and they let it go. :irked:

the lake i go to is full of them.
i get at least 20 hits every trip but only catch very few.

jd762 "i think thats his name" told me about a trick.
braided rope on the hooks.
been trying it but havent had much luck :irked:

im going to file my hooks to razor sharp next time and see if it helps.

so if ya have a tip, lets hear it.

and if ya want, post your biggest gar catch.
heres mine,20"

Get a car battery and an inverter out by the lake. Then take two extension cords and run them in opposite directions. Plug them in and...:grinno:

Or ya can just toss a stick of TNT out there in the middle and it will be raining gars.

I just came up with another useless idea. Instead of fishing line, use wire. Yes this still involves the car battery. Put a switch in your lure and when the gar bites it, BAM :grinno:

Seriously though, I am in the same boat as you. Their mouths are too bony to set a hook. We always let the gar run with the bait and swallow it. That doesn't help if you want to keep them in a tank. They are good to eat but hard to get into.

Gar are easy to catch. Im surprised you havent caught one with the method I mentioned.

If just the regular rope isnt working head to a shop that sells fly tying supplies and get you some tinsel and tie it to th rope to add a bit more flash.

I also catch alot while fishing with live minnows and circle hooks for other fish. For some reason the hook get tangled in the line sometimes and I land them .

Another thing to do (I think I told you before) is use those tiny light wire bluegill hooks and braided line. Use live minnows for bait. Allow the gar to take the minnow for a LONG time to swallow the bait and hook into the gullet. Once that happens set the hook. The hooks are so thin they can straighten out so you have to let/hope the braided line entangles in the gars mouth. Dont worry about the hook. It should rust out in a couple days and cause these tough beasts no harm.

My biggest I sadly dont have a pic of. I am 5'8" and he went from my chin and and still dragged the ground a few inches. I guesstimate weight at 35lbs.

I have a scar on my right hand from when a small 12" gar shook his head and his teeth got me. It was strange. If youve ever been bit by a snake youll know what Im talking about. At first when it happened and looked down nothing was there. Next thing a knew I had blood every where!

I know what you mean by the bite - had that happen, but only one tooth actually scraped / got me.

I used shiners - sure, you lose some, but I personally brought in most of them. Used a regular hook - nothing fancy.
